| Multi gear gearboxes: post em up
For some strange reason what ever I type in the search window, I can't seem to find custom multi gear gearboxes. Please if you have a link or pic of 2 or 3 gear gearboxes(the inside) post em here. I need ideas on how to do the shifting part. And ratios. Thanks. |

The complexities of a multi speed trans would make it nearly impossible for the home fabricator to make. You really need access to CNC equipment to be able to make one unless you could source parts from something else. The problem with sourcing parts is finding parts small enough, I thought about making a custom case for the internals from a summit trans but even those are way to big to make a reasonably sized shifting t case. Basically how a 2 speed works is: There are two sets of gears that are constantly meshed together on two shafts one shaft has the gears attached to it the other shafts gears are free spinning. There is a shift collar that is splined to the second shaft, this is what engages one set of gears or the other. The collar has some sort of pins so when the collar is slid over next to one of the gears it locks into it so now that gear controls the shafts rotation. In a full size trans generally all the forward gears would have syncros that basically provide a bit of friction just before the collar engages a gear to match the speed of the collar and the gear it will mesh to, if no syncro is present then you will end up grinding gears on every shift (technically not grinding the gears but the mating features on the collar and the side of the gear). Syncros would not be necessary on an RC application just to eliminate complexity. Here is a pic to help explain: There was someone building a scale motor and transmission, I forget where it was but that would give you a good idea of what is involved. You can only get so far without the required equipment. |

That is not a problem. Also I just made a 1:1 transferbox with 20t pinions. I'm just thinking and trying and designing. Slowly but steadily. Thanks for the explaining pic. Also I found a pic of summit trans internals so I got it now. | |
