Chassis for Starter Project

Hi everyone,

I've decided that I want to build my own crawler from the ground up. I could use all the suggestions I can get to purchase my first parts. I don't have a bunch of cash so I plan to spread out the project over a few months. My only specs are that I want it to look kinda like the first truck in this video. As you can see I don't know a whole lot so any help would be awesome! Thanks!

Probably the easiest and cheapest way to get going is a SCX-10 kit. Then you get everything you need and figure out what body you want and put it on there. Then you can start customizing.

You can buy a star and be able to access the classifieds on here, they come up for sale often and you can find a good deal if you look for a couple weeks.

I would really like to do that but unfortunately I don't have the start up cash for that

If you just want something scale but don't really plan to comp right away, you have lots of options. As far as the look, all you need is the body you like and an inexpensive chassis. The links you can make yourself for cheap and don't even need any fancy tools to do so. You can also find good deals on rollers. One thing your will want to do for sure is use the search button. If you peep my join date and my post count, I have found just about everything I needed on this site or another. That, and I'm not usually that chatty. once you get a star to check out the classifieds.

Well honestly it doesnt get much cheaper than a scx-10 roller. How much do you have to work with?

vonarx1337 10-05-2011 08:07 AM

I have about $150 startup cash :(

You just missed out because there was a set in there a few days ago, but RPP has complete SCX axles in their Salvage Yard from time to time for about $70. Transmissions are about $30 and a set of shocks can be had for about $20. SCX tires and wheels are in there now for $36. That's about $150 for all brand new parts, and everything you would need to build a roller from scratch. From there, the sky's the limit on what you want to spend.

Welcome to RCC "thumbsup"

What is RPP?

If i had the money bro i would give you parts for free. But the honcho kit is a realy good start"thumbsup"

vonarx1337 10-05-2011 11:00 AM

I know that would be a great start I just can't get the start up cash for now. I would like the ability to build one completely from the ground up piece by piece but it almost looks even from the RPP website that that isn't even possible

I got a scx10 chassie but the front rail is bent

vonarx1337 10-05-2011 11:07 AM

I guess My most major question for right now is...What do I buy first if I want to start from scratch? My biggest issue is knowing what parts will fit what chassis and what order I need to buy them in. So if I'm going to build off of a SCX10 chassis what do I get after that?

NJK 10-05-2011 11:10 AM

You will need axels shocks shock towers links and trusses for the links, body post, trans,motor,esc,remote/recever,lipo battery, wheels, drive shafts, servo,um i no im missing something but i cant think right now its 7am in hawaii Lol

vonarx1337 10-05-2011 11:13 AM

Thanks! Ha my uncle lives in Hawaii! Oh and how do I know what parts to get specific for an SCX10?

There is alot of brands that make parts for the scx10. But u should save you cash and jus get a honcho kit its cheap and all you will have to add is your electronics. Our for abour $50 more u can fet a ready to run. Or jus buy a star and get the classifieds and wait untile a sweeet! Deal pops up the classifieds has a lot of great deals. So if i wer you i would buy a stare"thumbsup"

vonarx1337 10-05-2011 11:23 AM

How much does a star cost and where do I get it? I wouldn't mind picking up a truck for under 200...if possible

NJK 10-05-2011 11:26 AM

The star i think is $20 but try look at the top of the newbies section there should be a stuff that tells you how to support rcc. And if you wait you will stumble accross a deal for about 200 our less. And u just missed a couple deals that was under 200.
