Default Making scaler chassis

Hey, this will be my first scaler (though been in the RC hobby for several years). I picked up a square steel tube and plan on cutting it in half (think SCX10 chassis...).

My question is: Should I form the steel before I cut it in half, or vise-versa? What have you all done? It seems like bending it first would be more practical so I would only have to do it once.

Also, are there any techniques for making straight cuts with jigsaws? What do you use to coat the steel when complete?

Yes, you would want to form the shape as a whole then cut in half to make sure both sides are identical.

also befor you cut it in half, be sure to make your holes for the chassis also to also insure that everything is even and straight.

You just neeed to be sure that the chassis is even after you cut it as it will crack and warp under pressure. Just my 2 cents

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Make sure that the cut is even?

I'm certainly going to have to buy a blow torch....

Found I don't actually need to apply heat to bend the steel. Still a real pain in the rear, but I'm slowly getting it done. About 2/3 now and up to the tricky part (curved front).

Had to stop for the day as I started hurting my back pulling this stuff.

I'll be sure to start and official build thread (MRC > scaler) when the chassis is all cut out.

I would form it before cutting it.

Where did you get the tube?

Will be following this for sure.

Yeah yeah. Almost done forming it now. The tube is from Home Depot and was ~$4 for 3'. There's a huge metal warehouse in the area but I ha,ve yet to check it out.
