Harley's Workshop Build

I bought a house this summer. It has semi finished basement that has a perfect area for my RC workshop. I want a space to be able to work on all my stuff and stay organized.

My wants:
Clean and professional looking space
TV and stereo
Work benches
Work benches
Work benches
Good lighting
Photo booth
Plumbed for air tools
Enclosed area for my CNC mill
Storage for all my parts and trucks
Area able to function as a workshop for my motorcycles too

I started by drawing up the floor plan. Currently the room functions as a laundry room and utility room.

After drawing everything I drew up where I wanted to build the walls and then started on figuring out how layout the benches.

The laundry room is also to function as a storage room for stuff not associated with RC (like I have much of that).

Some starting shots of the area filled with boxes of RC parts and tools. I just piled it in after the move, knowing I would get to this project sooner than later.

The old nasty bench will get ripped out.

Hit up Lowes and get some of those pre-fab counter tops for the Work benches. Get some Plano organizers for all the small stuff, for the bigger stuff I would get a cheap Harbor freight tool box. The plastic orginizers never seem to work right and all the drawers end up broken.

Don't forget to make room for the mini fridge, shop stools, and the bikini girl calendar....."thumbsup"

Some laminated paneling to box it in.

I haven't decided on all counter tops but one of the 6' benches is getting a 1/4" steel top.

I have a 12 drawer Craftsman box I picked up this weekend for lots of that stuff. As far as organizers go, I have tons and will be buying many more!

I forgot about the calendar though

Next was to create the utility room.

I decided to box in the utility room with peg board. This gives me organizing space AND airflow for the furnace and water heater.

The two rooms done for now. Pretty decent for a day's work.

Good call on the pegboard. Being a propane service tech I have seen the negative effect that bad venting and combustion air can cause.

God I need to buy my own place.

I like white melamine for my bench tops...has a nice clean look to it.

Thanks for the confirmation on my theory :ror: I am really looking forward to getting this space done. It will be the first time I will have a PROPER workshop. I have been using spare bedrooms in apartments for the last 5 years

Thanks Sam. I can't wait to really get going on the actual shop part.

OntarioCrawler 11-27-2011 11:39 PM

looks good. in the summer i can get away with my garage shop bench, but during the winter its my tv stand in my bedroom. thankfully i sold some cars so i have space and down to 3 crawlers.

Thats the type of thing I've been dealing with for so long. I just want to finally spread out and have a place for everything.

Now I can finally see myself investing in more tools and such too.

Lookin' good Harley. Keep up the good work!

Great progress so far.

Just make sure that door and space is large enough for a furnace/water heater removal and install. Some contractors charge quite a bit more for working in "small spaces" or with "tight entries".
