Exclamation R2 tranny NOISY as CUSS!

No matter how I set my pinion mesh this thing is LOUD! Is this just the way it is with hardened 32P tranny gears? I just put brand new ones in, lubed 'er all up and still it's freakin' noisy...

Any one else have this issue?

I might give it a shot, but i use a combo of Lucas Red'n'Tacky with Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and it's SUPER gooey and sticky..

Sounds like it's just the nature of this tranny, so as long as there's no shards everywhere, it's all good!

BTW:
What's a good amount of play on the pinion with 32P?
A half mm? One mm?

I use the rock lube in by r2 and it runs pretty quite. I don't think it will ever be as quite as an axial trans, but it has held up very well for me in my sportsman rig.
As far as the play, I just set it so there is as small amount of play as possible but yet maintaining some play rotating all of the way around.

it's hard to tell someone how much play. It is something that you have to show. For ease purposes, the paper trick will get you there.

Use a piece of paper and sandwich it in between the two gears. Tighten it up and then spin to remove the paper.

paper trick works on 48p gears. 32p gears use more gap. Best way I can say it, the gears need to have 1/4 of their depth unfilled by the other gear.

RockJelly works great or fill the heck out of the trans with Red N Tacky. That stuff will even quiet bullies.

Thanx guys, for the feedback..

I found the problem:
My mesh was still too tight (props to jetboat)..there was sufficient play if it were 48p, but backed the pinion off a bit (giving around 1mm play), and it sounds alot better...
