Default Maxstone 10 ESC, motor Swap ?'s

I've got a maxstone 10 that is fairly stock with hub spacers and white dot rovers and FJ40 body. I have a Trackstar 60 amp ESC and a 13 turn 3000kv motor that I can pull out of a spare shortcourse truck. Could i swap these onto the crawler? What kind of gears would I want to run if I did? Or would it be to much motor for the drivetrain? We have about 4-5 inches of snow and it would be awesome to mob through the deep stuff. Let me know if this is possible or if it would be a waste. I could also swap in my VXL ESC and run the stock motor with a lipo but I dont know what that 540 can handle. Thanks in advance.

I dont know if that motor or esc is sensored but if not, it will not have very lowend torque. What do you have in the stone now?

The esc and motor are stock. Could I run the vilenion esc and stock motor and run a 2 cell lipo instead or would it burn up the motor? I know the vxl esc will run brushed motors, but of course there arent any specs to be found for the RC540 motor. I'm just looking for a little more wheel speed.

Well if you hook up the esc right, you can run it. The only thing you need to watch is motor temps. If you have a heat gun watch it or you can do the finger test which is where you place two fingers, your pointer and middle fingers, on the can of the motor, if you cant hold them on for more than 2 seconds without the heat becoming too hot for your fingers, its too hot. I would try it. If you want to go fast, you might even try the vxl motor but that would be a monster truck and not a crawler. You can try either. Just remember, HOOK UP THE ESC THE RIGHT WAY THE FIRST TIME and have it on lipo mode

Awesome thanks for the help. Do you know which wire will be left over? I've never hooked up a brushless to that esc.

A brushless motor NEEDS 3 wires from the ESC, a brushed motor needs 2 wires. "Usually" it's the red & black wires.....but not 100% of the time. Check the manual for your ESC.
1-It will state if it handles brushed motors (along with wind/turn limits).
2-It will state which wires to use.

Not sure why I didn't think of that. I figured it out. A (+) C (-)

It works great. Even tried it with a 3s. Motor doesn't seem to be heating up at all. It's about twice as fast.

Great glad to hear that, does it still have good low end torque?

It seems to be the same as before just faster when you get on it.

Just so you can try, try flipping the shocks end to end. Also, i dont know about the exceed but try bta. I just had to flip my steering knuckles and flip the servo backwards and run your linkage in the back. Nice looking rig. Looks good

This is on the rear axle but its identical to the front since it's 4ws ready. I'm not sure if I could run BTA due to the links being there, and I have no funds or longer links to be able to move them.

Look at my thread, wanting it better, and you can see how my steering is. Looks similar to yours, you can bend your own link if you want but for sure mount shocks upsidedown, and if you have internal springs in those too, take them out. Do those for easy fixes, then try out the bta say,... When its broke and your waiting on parts, just try it out. Worth a try. Its great. I never get hung up anymore on the front links.

Also, take out those bump stops on the shafts.

I'll give it a shot I do have 1 spare link that I may be able to bend and cut to rig it. I usually only take out the bump stops when I'm running the original body it rubs like hell and chips the paint on the FJ40 body. With the shocks unlimited it has tons of articulation. I will flip the shocks though, can only help the CG. I'll check out your thread too. Thanks for all the great info.

I finally get what you are saying on the BTA I should be able to do that in less than 5 min.

Yes. Flip the shocks, and on the shocks, how does the body rub? Well anyway, look at mine, mine is a creeper but looks the same. Just a question, does your rig have toruque twist?

If I allowed full flex my tires rub the body. It did have a little TT out of the box but I changed shock oil and used some spacers and its pretty much gone. I already flipped the rear c hubs and attached turnbuckles. You can see the one just to the left of the green plate in my last picture.
