Default Buy, or Build?

The delima is to Buy a scaler, or build one~

do I start with a used axial rig (or new even) 250.00-350.00 and sell off parts or just piece everything together a little at a time?

axles, tranny, t-case, drive shafts, motor, esc, body's, etc..... (thank goodness I have a Spektrum Dx7 for a radio!)

thoughts?

You could probably acquire all the parts you need from the classified section for alot cheaper than you could buy it all together.. There's axles for sale often for like 50 bux you can get a trans for about 25 and a complete chassis for around 40 or 45..but it really depends on your skill level and knowledge. Are you wanting to do a custom tuber or use bought parts such as bumpers, sliders and such? This site is awesome for new guys you can find any info you need here just read the sticky's and research build threads you can get lots of ideas from guys in here.. Good luck with your build

If its your first, I would suggest buying an Axial product. Then you can modify it, tweak & tune it while collecting parts and then someday you can apply those parts to a custom build.

Build, its always more fun to drive a rig you put together.

been into all kinds of RC's since I was 8 or so (1985) I am a builder, as experienced as they get. I prefer aircraft, But my wife and I used to wheel 1:1's and I have owned 3 or 4 EB's.

thanks for the insight. I bought the front K44, looking for a rear now.

i was going through this about 2 months ago.if you buy all the parts used and piece it together the price wouldnt be too bad.. if you buy all the parts new and piece it together its around the 400-450.00 mark. i figured it was cheaper to buy RTR.

Going to work on the drive train first: axles, t-case, tranny. and go from there. I still think I may buy a donor rig for a few hundred bucks just to have spare links and what not..... I am fabbing a true 1/10 bronco frame, and will do most everythingon a scratch build basis. will have 2 bodies a scale 1.55 uncut bronco and a scale 1.9 cut bronco. I am looking forward to it!

suggestions welcome~

Sounds cool LR. I would love to see more true scale custom frames instead of the usual scx10 frame. Gotta progress somewhere

I went old school with my scaler. Mostly consists of stuff around the garage, custom stuff and parts from several different kits, so its definitely unique

Well thus far I have sourced a front K44, a disruptor compact tranny, and a Tekin FXR. price thus far: 240.00 going to try and find some 1/4x1/2" steel box tomorrow.

Ooo.. that seems a bit pricey. You should have bought a RTR!

Good luck with your build.. be sure to post up a build thread with plenty of pictures!

yes, at that price I almost could have a fully running truck. :( however it would not be what I really want.

normally i would suggest a kit or rtr but at this point it would be a total waste since you will be using very little if anything from the stock parts

I've done both and have found the best deal is to buy a roller that's mostly what I want. Then do all the stuff I'd normally do. Right now deciding between a Wraith and Dingo (I know they are totally different trucks).

I would find something used that already has some upgrades and then just change it to what you want. Thats how I built my first scaler and it worked out good

you don't sound like the type that would be happy with RTR. It's hard to resist the new RTRs, especially Axial, with 2.4 & decent ESC & all but I gots to build it myself.
