| BWD "Project X" Direct Drive Trans...so many applications!
This is a project that I've sat on for long enough. Meet the BWD "Project X" Direct Drive Trans. This was developed for a host of applications ranging from 1/10-1/8 scale go fast/FOFF rigs to LCC Axled Sporty rigs. While it appears very stout (intended to be near bomb proof), this proto only weighs as much as a bone stock plastic housing/geared AX-10 transmission with stock alum outdrives. That said, it comes in at under 2" wide in the vertical config, 3.2" L, and 2.25" tall in the vertical config (plus spur height). The motor is stationary, mounted at the very bottom, and the top shaft pivots for gear mesh/change adjustments. The top shaft is supported by 2x 6mm x 12mm bearings (there is an 8mm output version coming for big FOFF'ers and go fast rigs that will use even bigger bearings). The bearing nearest the spur is placed between the spur and that drive shaft yolk, to keep lateral load on the top shaft to a minimum. The mounting points for the trans are symmetrical front to rear so it can be mounted with the spur facing forward or rearward. The rigidity of the housing allows the chassis skid to be pocketed down placing the motor as far down as possible, without getting the drive shafts into the skid/lower links. Also note the drive shaft in this config is centered (and in the lay down config is only about 1/2" off center) which will keep your drive shafts out of your upper links. The lay down config will be posted in the near future. Anyway, keep in mind that this is a proto, but it's coming. BWD |

And here I've been messing with getting a ten-scte trans to work... I can get the drive shafts centered, but on a 12.5" WB, seems like driveshaft angle is a bit too extreme. Bad ass. What's the projected prove point on this? Last edited by TSK; 04-06-2012 at 06:13 PM. |

Well it's pretty simply and extremely tough, not much can go wrong...but it'll be pushed anyway. The only part I have to outsource is the top shaft, so cost will stay down where I can make it worth doing.

Waaaaaay cool! If this can be mounted on a SCX-10 skid, I will definitely need one for my scaler, and I'm SUPER stoked about the mini version! Last edited by papabash; 04-07-2012 at 03:09 PM. |

Surprised it took so long for someone to say something. I just wanted something other than white under it and had that wheel sitting on my shelf. It made it easy to spin and shoot pics as well. I guess super wheel would be an understatement. It's and 8" diameter beadlock for one of the robots I've been developing. Thanks my friend! I have a feelin these are gonna be used on a lot of widely diverse projects. If I'm right, the price for this bomb proof complete package is gonna be very nice as well. The spur gets a custom cnc machined 6 bolt adapter that utilizes a 3/32" x 1/2" drive pin...beef I'm planning to have a handful of these with me at ecc, and some in rigs to demo there! BWD
