i was wondering if motor oil will be too thick for the shock oil? Lets say a 5w30? or 0w20?

I have used ATF fluid and used hydraulic jack oil and never had an issue with it

Now for speeding up or slowing down piston travel I use rc silicone oil which is specified for our shocks

When it comes to rock crawler, which is better speed or slow the piston?

For what you posted about your setup I would try in the 30wt to 50wt range.

I ran 70wt up front and some 1000wt diff oil in the rear. It worked pretty good but I'd go with a little thinner fluid though.
