Stealth Tranny Tech. how to
 

This is how I locked my Stealth type tranny and moded the output shaft.
I will have a bunch of pictures and will most likely stop and continue as time allows.

On to it. This is what I received off ebay.

1st you will take everything apart.

What I did to lock the tranny was take out the bearings (little balls)

Sence I had it taken apart I did the mod to the output shafts.
since these are the parts that I had available this is how I will mod this with the long shafts. It will also work with the yoke shown in the top left of the pic.

1st I turned down the solid part of the drive shaft that fits inside the slider. I made sure they fit inside the output shaft... snug.
I then drilled a hole in this area of the output shaft. I did this 1st by heating and letting it cool on it's own. I found that it does help drilling after doing this a bit, not much but enought to notice.

I drilled and taped the hole and the shaft.

OK some more.

I then used the 6-32 bolts that I have around to fit into the 1/8" hole I drilled and taped with a 6-32 tap. I inserted the bolt and cut the end off, smoothed it down with my dremel and put it togeather.

I then put everything back togeather. I found that with this tranny I had to use a washer where the output shafts are put togeather to the gears as this particular one didn't have enought thread that goes in the center of the output shafts to tighten it down all the way.
I put the washer where the bearings would have been.

The one washer seemed to be enough to keep it from moving at all.

I then finished it up and put it togeather.
Here is the end product.

I should also have enough room for a slightly larger gear. This is an 84t. i don't think I'll need any biger of one though.

Nice write up. Is that a newer-style tranny? Mine looks different. The case is molded around the gears so you can see where each gear is (if that makes sense).

I tried to drill the outdrives without heating 'em and gave up. It's a total pain in the butt. Those things are hard as hell...

yep when I started drilling I used a step drill bit and it was making progress slowly. So I tried the heat and cool and it went a bit faster.

CAUTION: when using a step bit be carefull not to put to much pressure when it breaks through or it will go to the next size. Lucky for me it worked out on the one hole I made bigger. Cause the bolt sits in it nicely with the tappered head.

K_B - This was a TEAM LOSI XXXT MF1 TRANNY. and it had the cover over the gear. Looks kinda like a cone. I just discarded them for now. Might use them for something else in the futur though

Almost forgot..
If you want to use the revo type or tmaxx type of yokes you will need to drill out the center of the yoke and make sure it slids over the output shaft. Then you'll just use the pin that is on the yoke to set it in place. I'll be doing that to the other side to show the differnces. With a pic. or two.

Which way do you suggest for reliability?
I'll be doing this shortly on mine. Just want to know what I'm doing, when I get there... :wink:

Also. To lock it, all I have to do is...? :

• Remove the balls
• Put a washer in there

Do I CA glue the washer in?
What size washer? Thickness/I.D & O.D.?

I actually prefer the Maxx yoke because its stronger and you can't put a metal yoke onto a stealth or losi tranny.

I have the stealth tranny that K_B mentioned, I was told it was from a B3.

As for reliability I can't say at the moment. I do know that I did the maxx yokes for my VS build that i sold and didn't like the way the plastic was so thin when you drill it out. I think this way will work well. I'll have to test it out but I'm waiting for some stuff to come in before I can test this version.

You may not even have to use a washer. So far the two that I've done one needed a washer and one didn't. No CA glue used on either one. The one that didn't need a washer was able to tighten up with no slipping. You may also want to save the balls and use them later if you needed to.
The size of washer??? I have a bunch of washers in my toolbox and found one that fit in there with out it angleing any parts when tightend. When I get home I can find out that info if you really need it though.
I also didn't "lock" the slippers. I just over tighten it. I will add to this when I have the time to drill and tap two holes in the slippers and gear. I will have pics of that mod as well.

send me all the parts and were looking at $25. $20 to do the work and $5 for shipping it back.
If you want me to buy the parts then the shafts are like 6.50 at my LHS. and you'll have to finish the shafts to the axles. If you want me to set everything up then I'll need the axles, tranny and parts or money for parts on top of the $20 plus whatever shipping is. I'll also need to know how long the drive shafts have to be.

That is a good idea. It's to easy for you to "farm" out the work.
This took me like 30 minutes and that was stoping to take pics and clean everything. Plus my 4 year old kept taking stuff and trying to get into the pics. :-P
