| 27T Motor as winch?
I was about to put my stock 27T Axial SCX-10 motor up for sale when it hit me...would one be able to use the motor as a winch? It certainly has torque, speed, and a place to secure a drum for winch cable (drill through rod and secure a plastic drum and secure drum/line with small bolt/nut). Putting weight aside, has anybody thought about this? I know it would probably require a ESC, but couldn't you put the ESC on the 3rd channel and run a small 2S 1200MaH battery. Seems like a good idea, you could essentially mount it far back and guide the cable through the chassis with brake line and have it pop out and go through a fairlead. Even if the ESC doesn't have a drag brake, it would still work quite well given your crawler's ESC has a drag brake. -Sin |

I thought about doing this with a Losi Xcelerin brushless motor / esc I have. It is really tiny and I am not sure if it would have enough torque to pull anything.

Yes it has been done, and yes it works quite well. Jason did in in one of his scalers, although there are no details about exactly how he did it. looking for info bout this one |

I don't remember if he had a separate battery but I think he did. A Y-harness to a single battery would work just fine though. I have a winch that is run off a Mamba25 (Micro sidewinder) ESC and I control it with a 3 position 3rd channel switch and it works just fine. The 27T motor will be fast but I don't know if it will have enough torque. A 55T motor might work better depending on how much weight you need to pull, but you never know till you try.

Maybe a gear reduction unit would help the torque situation. Tower sells a cheap one..

I've got a few stick mount gear reduction units with 280 motors on them i was thinking would work well for a winch. Might even be able to run them off a servo board instead of an esc. Something like this TowerHobbies.com | Great Planes ElectriFly Gearbox S280 5:1 Ratio Standard |

Skid Plate owns the rig now and might be able to give you more info.

Jerry (the DMG) has a R2 trans that was converted to a winch on his big recovery rig. It will lift some serious weight. Pretty much only limited by the weight of his rig, since it just starts dragging it if the object is too heavy.

I figured words alone weren't enough to describe it, so I had to dig up the picture again I'd love to build something like that some day.

I saw a guy in a you tube video that used an axial trans from a SCX10, with a 27t Axial motor, as a winch. He used a 2s lipo and rocker switch assembly to run it forward or reverse. A small speed control would make it VERY cool. But that leads me to a second idea. I bet there is someone on here that would donate a plastic XR10 gear box, gears, heck I bet you could even get the upper gear shaft. Cut it off, put a spool on it, instant winch. The trick would be how to mount it, but I am sure it is possible. |

Here are a couple horrible cell phone pics of a front side Jones tranny I was working on. Don't see why it wouldn't work as a winch, if you could find somewhere to mount it in the chassis. |
