Default My rig is wayyyyy to slow

I just bought a rig off of craigslist that has this transmission in it....
RC4WD R2 Crawler Transmission X-0209 new #Z-U0010 - The Crawlers Store LLC

And this thing is slow as hell, i just installed a 27t axial motor in it that i had laying around and it is still extremely slow.... what are my best gearing options for this trans to get some wheel speed?

Thanks in advance

It's a custom build with ax10 axles.

I couldn't find any markings on the motor that was in it and it didn't spin very smooth anyways so that why i tried the 27t and it didn't help.

What is the speed at what voltage in absolute terms? ("To slow" is very much related to perception. For me 2 mph top speed is doable but not comfy, 1 mph is to slow while 5 mph is plenty.)

What batteries are you running? LiPO, NiMH?? What is the voltage, or cell count?

If your ESC can handle it, going from a 2S LiPO to a 3S LiPO would gain some speed.

Also make sure the rest of the drivetrain spins free.

Maybe rechecking the ESC settings and doing a calibration.

I'm running 7.4v nimh batteries because lipo is out of the budget right now.

As far as speed goes, I'm just trying to sling a little mud when i need to ... it has tons of torque but no wheel speed when i need it.

And 5 mph is very slow to me. Im comfortable with 10-15mph.

Your voltage is part of your issue, a 7.2 volt nimh isn't going to give you a lot of punch or top end. A quick solution will be to gear the pinion way up. I can't remember how many teeth I used to run on my old R2 trans, but it was big enough that I had to take the case apart to put it on. It still wasn't very fast, but was a big improvement.

I would head over to your local hobby store and see what 32 pitch pinions they have.

Those Puller motors are awesome!
You should take a closer look at it and see if it's in good working condition... you could also send it into Holmes Hobbies and for a few bucks they'll freshen it up for ya.
Not sure if they will if it's not one of his... I bet if you take some close up shots of the winds, he can tell you more about it.

If it's a 14t, it can handle up to 6s lipo, that'll sling some mud!

I have the HD r2 trans, and the buggest pinion you can fit is a 19. That's a pretty easy, cheap fix.

When funds come available, look into lipos. Make a world of difference, not only in speed, but runtimes as well.

Good luck!

Do you have a link to a pinion gear that would work? Thats sounds like a good cheap way to get a little speed.

Robinson Racing Pinion Gear 32P 18T

It's an 18T. You wil be safe with this size, because (like mentioned earlier), the bigger pinions can have issues with fitment.

Also, look into that Puller motor you have. You may have a gem there.

The motor is sold black with no engraving but it does have a little round yellow sticker on it that says... 05 cobalt 7 turn
