Crawler shock tuning/setup

hi there,
I'd like to have some ideas on how you're setting up / tuning your shocks on your crawler (Berg, XR10).
I've the good length but I want to know how to play with shocks and what are the consequences of these mods...
oil wt, springs(MRC/miniT/...), internal limit, external limit ...

The answer to your question is as long as the day is long. Maybe if you asked about one part of the equation at a time you might get more help. Like what effect does shock oil have on the performance of a shock and so on.

Limiting the shocks is mostly for when u have more travel than wanted ie you will side hill better usually when limiting travel. I've seen this in the 1:1 world, for awhile everyone was trying to get all the articulation they could, till they found neg consequences for a very floppy susp. And lack of control. I suggest you check out del monte's build and videos, IMO his xr has a very nice mix of flex, grip, clearance and balance.
In the rc crawler world it seems more people limit the shocks when the shocks are laid down more, it probably helps limit damages also if set properly. Also when laid down more to keep a similar feel you need to up the weight oil in shock.

Springs. If too stiff then u end up with a bouncy rig, this can be slowed with thicker oil in shock...but then u will end up with fairly immobile susp.

Basically the shocks should be able to reach full travel (whatever the limit) before picking up a tire or the spring is too stiff. My personal optimum.

These are all covered in stickies though....so essentially you need to do some searching. Shock tuning, spring tuning, shock setup learn the basics and find a build similar to yours if you can and try it on yours compared to what u have now. I highly suggest writing down what combos you have tried and liked and you will learn along the way!

The oil wt I use is 7 wt motor cycle fork oil. I change the springs out as needed depending on the track we are crawling.
