Default Need to make xtra long driveshaft

I need to make an ~9" long driveshaft for my HEMTT project. Any ideas? I'm wanting to use what I got or do something on the cheap so no special ordered stuff. I have axial driveshaft parts I thought about buying a piece of brakeline and inserting a driveshaft into each end and pinning it. I don't think just splicing a handful of the ends together will be strong enough.

I'm not sure if this is even doable...

How about using a carrier bearing setup? That way you can use 2 smaller driveshafts. Look and see if the vendors here have carriers, not sure if they do, but you can always make your own using a Tamiya bellcrank or something similar.

i spliced a 10" shaft together for my "dig dummy" project out of an axial driveshaft set. after the exterior epoxy cured i filled the shaft with epoxy and an 1/8" dowell. i have run the truck this way for a while with no break yet... that is also waiting for me to wrap the exterior of the shaft with fiberglass to level the surface and add a bit of re-enforcement

Ultra Scale Hardened Steel Driveshaft (7.08"/8.66"-180mm/220mm) 5mm

Just that far off from what you need. Now is the ~9" needed, is that extended or collapsed?

Also, you could do what Axial does for their Wraith (located in their blogs). Just add another driveshaft end to it. It held up for me on brushless which was basically in a FoFF Wraith.

I thought about the carrier bearing later after I posted. That might be the ticket. I have some spare bearings and I can make a shaft for everything to mount to. Just have to come up with a mount. $70 for a single driveshaft is exactly what I wanted to avoid. That's ridiculous in my opinion, that's why I make most of my own stuff. I have a welder but no metal shaft already in my collection to start with so I think I'll try to come up with a carrier bearing design. ~9" would be the collapsed length.

If your looking for a cheap option then they have some very cheap ones on ebay. Search for seller. Jv-e-shop I believe they go up to 10" just ask they are quick to respond (usually within 24hrs)

Here is an idea for you: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/gener...k=flipoff.html

I have one of the twins of this rig and the carrier bearing setup works well and is cheap to make.

Do some maxx shafts. That's what I did on my ranger. Mine is about 9inches long.

I know he said no special order but at 10-15 dollars you cant buy the materials to make one. Just figured I would throw it out there for him to see.

Has anyone tried to source up and use a very small piece of square tubing with a even smaller piece that slips into it? Similar to what the toyota and jeep guys do only rc scale? Then I could see some metal driveshaft yokes brazed on the ends or if you can't find those I'm sure you could epoxy some plastic ones into the square tubing. Of course with a dremel and a few other tools found in most guys garages I'm sure one would fabricate a yoke from scratch.

I run a square shaft on the front of my 1:1 Toyota. I have been planning to do it on my hilux scaler but I haven't gotten to it yet.

I think I've got it figured out. Going to take a piece of the plastic cutting board I use, drill an opening on either side for a bearing which I have laying around, and make a shaft to pass through. Drill the shaft for a pin and mount the piece of cutting board between the frame rails like a crossmember. We will see of the plastic ears on the old type traxxas/axial driveshafts I have will hold up. I might have some of the larger maxx truck shafts in a box somewhere that would be more ideal. Thanks for the help brain storming guys.

Homemade carrier setup then.... If you make a drop in the center and mount your bearing assembly there, you can scrub off some height difference.

Done!

You can see the shorter end up by the transmission. Made from a piece of cutting board, couple bearings left over from rebuilding the scx axles, and a drill bit I cut a piece off of. Made of nothing but stuff I had laying around. Shafts are center shafts from a revo I believe.
