Default Christmas gift suggestions

Hey everybody I'm in search for suggestions for some parts for a ax10 project fora friend of mine for Christmas. Ok so here's the deal I have a friend who wants to get into crawlers but can't really afford it. He borrowed mine one nite and had a lot of fun with it. His wife told him it was retarded and didn't need to spend money on anything like that and then she heard the cost and was like No way! So I told him I'd sell him a ax10 that my son built with spare parts for around $100 he told his wife about and said no. Since then she's called me and wanting to buy if for him for Christmas but stupid me priced it all assuming I had parts to complete it but I don't. Do you all have any suggestions on parts that are reasonable? I need a transmission steering servo and esc. I have a traxxas radio set up and motor. I'm leaning toward traxxas esc and axial servo. Any cheap but good suggestions I won't make any money off of it but its for a friend. I have an old charger and batteries ill be throwing in. So any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

This is probably a better servo... alot stronger at least.
I'm running one in my super mini: Solar Servo D772 High Voltage 0.17sec@7.4v 64g Digital Metal Gear

The XL-5 is not ideal for crawling as it doesn't have a drag break.
Maybe a used Castle Creations Sidewinder ESC (I think they have drag brake) or Axial...

For a budget I'll always recommend a solar 772 from hobbypartz.com It's under $20 and just flat works.

EDIT:

Nice timing Johnny!

I've got an RC4WD outcry with 5 amp bec I'd let go for cheap to help out if he'll be running nicd's or nimh's since it doesn't have a low voltage cutoff.

Tpro mg996 servos are decent and under $20 dont buy the knock off ones tho make sure to get them from a good well known place. The xl5 will work but has no drag brake. You can usually find a cheap stock ae2 on the classifieds. Or the outcry is pretty good and cheap too

I'd check DollarHobbyz, RPPHobby, and eBay for cheap take-off parts.

I have the CYS servo from Crawford Performance Engineering in my Clod Buster and my SCX10.

You can get a cheap brushed ESC from HobbyKing. They have a 45A brushed ESC for $10.

Dollar Hobbyz Home Page
RPP Hobby | Radio Controlled Cars, Trucks, Boats, Helis, Planes, Plastic Models
Servo: Crawford Performance Engineering : CPE-SER4: CYS Hi-Torque Metal Gear Servo - $21.99
ESC: http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...arehouse_.html

BTW - tell your friend to find a new wife...

How do you like that servo? I read about that one before on here. If its strong enough for clod wheels the it must have some good torque. Is it decently fast and center well?

I agree with white trash, the solar 772 is a good choice, as of transmission and any other parts you might need, try to buy used.
