Default Icon Shocks - AX30103, Are they worth it

Hello Everyone,

I am very new to the hobby and would appreciate some help. I have an Axial Yeti and SCX10 Rubicon unlimited. This question is regarding my Rubicon. I've made some minor upgrades (Aluminum Links, Aluminum Servo Horn and LED's in the front & Rear Bumpers).

I came across some ICON shocks (Axial part number AX30103) pre-assembed on Ebay. Are these shocks a worthy upgrade or are they simply for looks?

Thank you so much for the help.

Compared to the stock plastic shocks, they are a great upgrade. Compared to something like Powerstroke scalers or something else, I really don't know. I have had mine for several months and really enjoy them. They have both the looks and the performance I was looking for.

The difference between the metal and plastic (rtr) shocks are the bodies are alloy...its a far stretch to say they perform better than stock plastic shocks...the stock plastic shocks do tend to have a leaking problem but its the same small bore pistons, seals and shafts etc....Most tend to use a plastic bodied traxxas big bore shock...losi comp shocks are a good replacement shock if you want a metal body...almost 2yrs now with mine and not a single leak with great performance improvement with the larger (better designed) pistons and seal design....The axial shocks are way overpriced especially if buying them new...just my .02 cents.

I would not consider them an upgrade. I have them on my JK kit and they leak just as badly as normal SCX shocks.

For upgraded shocks you should consider the Pro-line units, or the G-made reservoir versions.

As mentioned, its the same poo as the other Axial shocks besides the bling. I have several sets of shocks from Axial, they all leak and performance is not good at all compared to others. Not worth it.

Besides Traxxas Bigbores are aluminium. Well worth their price, commonly used on crawlers.

I have a set of Icons and I have no complaints. Yeah the leak some but I have yet to see a true scale shock that doesn't leak. Not a big deal imo. Shock oil is cheap.

I still think that the Icons are an upgrade. I built them with Associated green slime on the O rings and the don't leak at all. They are much smoother than the plastic bodies, so I am not really sure what you guys say they aren't an upgrade.

They are better than the plastic shocks, but by so little that I would never consider spending money on them. The best upgrade would be a set of Traxxas shocks, or if you want to spend some money, the Proline shocks.

I would call them a durability upgrade over plastic but not a performance upgrade.

Thank you all so much for all of the excellent feedback! If I were to go proline or Traxxas what model numbers do you recommend?

For those who don't rate the icon shock, can you guys sell me a set of them cheap?

I love them on 2.2s or 2.2p, but for scale crawler, due to its weight, I found them having difficultly controlling the roll. But for a feather weight 2.2, they are very good. Being small diameter (so less rubbing) and easy preload adjustment.
