Default Transmission Outdrives In Phase?

It occurred to me when installing the AX10 Locked Transmission - Complete Metal Gear Set - AX30708 that the instructions don't mention anything about ensuring the outdrives are installed in phase (the holes for the drive shafts facing the same direction as each other).

Does it matter? Should I make sure that they are?

I seem to think yes, but thought I'd ask before continuing with the upgrade reassembly.

Thanks.

As an automotive technician I say yes.... As an rc guy I say no its not necessary. The rotating mass in these rc drive lines is so little it is negligible at best.

Line em up if you want. It cant hurt.

Thanks. I did line them up. Figured, as you said, can't hurt. I actually think it might be rather important. We all know it's vitally important with the drive shafts.

This also lead me to wonder if when some people report unexplained driveline vibration and have checked "everything" that perhaps it's these transmission outdrives being out of phase and they're simply overlooked because it's not mentioned in the instructions??? Something to look at for sure if you're having binding/shaking problems.

This YouTube video was posted by KJ10 in another thread and it's really good and applicable here too so I'll repost it --

If the drivelines are creating a vibration, chances are you've got bigger issues than being out of phase.

Still, I like them phased so they are easier to swap when the rig is together.

In the 1:1 world, I had my yokes miss-aligned on my jeep driveshafts, and it sounded very bad with a rumbling sound upon accel and decel. Once the alignment was done from axle to axle, there was no more noise and it felt very smooth. This is a 58 cj-5 btw.

So aligning the outdrives, would be the start of aligning the entire drive train, and eliminating all noise associated with that. Matching the yokes on the driveshafts would be next. Any noise after that would have to be associated to gears or something else.

In the past I noticed more during maintenance that driveshaft screwshafts weren't aligned than vibration during use.

I have had mips bind at somewhat "extreme" dline angles on some builds. Phasing em took it away

I just realized axial instructions do suggest phasing them. They say to line up their little notches on the driveshafts when building.

Agreed on phasing mip's, they can act weird out of phase and at extreme working angles... Both situations at once is just asking for trouble. Still the best for driveshafts however.

I think it's just as important in our world as in the real world. Especially between the output and input shafts:

I don't get why it matters now, but never did for the last ten years.

My OCD always made me line them (and everything else in my life) up, but I don't get this.

I can understand phasing in the case of extreme angles. However, if you build your rig right, you'll probably never see those angles.

Love the video..it says it all. Could have been done without the narration and it still would have made sense.

The small binding that occurs really isn't that big an impact to RC's, but it can wear out your U-joints faster, than if they're aligned properly.

Just my 2 cents.

Mine was a "lifted" g2.... What a pain that whole rig was, I only own the best part of that rig now, the body....
