Default 1/24 or 1/18 Cost effective crawling

Looking to get back in to some crawling, mainly because I think my 4 year old would enjoy it. We have about a $150 budget. I'm thinking either a 1/18 ECX Temper, 1/24 Losi Trail Trekker, or 2 - 1/24 ECX Tempers.

I'm thinking smaller so we can do some inside as well as outside.

I like the 1/18 because I can charge the battery on my peak charger. The others I would either have to modify or go the slow charger route.

What are your opinions?

You can charge micro batteries on a peak charger with the right connectors.

1/24 is great for in the house, but that's it. 1/18 can be used in the house or outdoors. Indoors it's much harder to challenge the 1/18th scale than the 1/24th. Outdoors the 1/18th scale vehicles are easily stopped by obstacles that 1/10 scale vehicles have no problems with.

RC4WD is said to be releasing a micro or mini D90 soon so you might want to wait for that. It's not going to be cheap I'm sure.

I say go for it, micros and minis are lots of fun indoors and outdoors, as with any RC need the right terrain. It should be easier to find great crawl and trail spots because it doesn't have to be as rugged and challenging terrain or as large an area.

I don't know if you've bought one yet, but I would recommend the 1/18 temper. It's the same vehicle as the redcat everest 16, which a lot of people already own and have builds in the losi mini rock crawler forum. That will help you get info on what you want to do to it as you go.

also, you mentioned using a peak charger. in that case you want to disregard what Jato said about using it for micro batteries, if it is the old style 2amp charger. I would only recommend using a digital charger with adjustable output down to 0.1 amp increments, for micro batteries.

If it is a 2a output peak charger, I wouldn't go below 1800mah for your battery packs.

What pack does the Temper take? And what do you charge it at?

I could do a 1/10 crawler but they are pricey.

X2, new charger is only about $60.

If you want 1/24th scale then buy that. 1/18th is fun too. Trail Trekker and ECX both use 4.8V 150mAH Ni-MH battery.

high-capacity 4.8V 220mAh NiMH battery provides for an extra long run time.

I have 1/10 crawlers and 1/24 trail trekkers and 1/24 redcat sumo crawler and the kids and i run the 1/24 crawlers inside and out and we have a good time.My 1/24 crawlers required different tires and I run lipos in them but all of the other mods were just free changes and they have been very reliable. Check out the micro section here for battery info and other ideas.

it comes with a 900mah battery, and a wall charger. I don't know how fast that charger is though.

the battery is the same size as the 1600-1800mah nimh battery packs, that you could use a 2amp peak charger on.
