Default What are people using these days for competition crawling?

I haven't been crawling in a few years and was considering a new crawler but it looks like so many of them are either scale rigs or 'rock racers'. I'm more interested in an all out crawler. I used to have an AX10 which was much simpler than my current XR10 that's giving me headaches.

I have an XR10 with the M2 DIG on it and a Spektrum DX4c tx and I haven't used it in well over a year because it drives me NUTS. Novak graciously replaced the M2 DIG and I continue to have issues:

The front wheels don't get as much power as the rears when I have the thumb switch in the right position

The front tires rub pretty badly with not so great turning radius

The steering is 'jerky' and occasionally does not move as requested by the tx

I'm not sure if it's my DX4c TX or what but I want something I can enjoy and so far this hasn't been it, although many people absolutely love the XR10.

What do you all have to say?

Novak went out of business for many reasons one of which was their products being garbage.

If your tires are rubbing there is something wrong with your setup. Lots of xr width scx axled rigs out there with 70* steering.

Most shafty rigs run scx or ar60 axles. With the xr10 going the way if the dodo bird moa guys have mostly moved on to bully or berg axles.

Dluxfab.com is the source for some of the most well thought out and groundbreaking comp crawler parts. Go poke around the berg or ax10 section and you'll see what I mean.

Lots of RC4WD Bully 2s out there. They recently brought an RTR version out for those just starting out.

Can't go wrong with the bully 2 RTR or kit model from towerhobbies.com

There's still lots of us using XR10 based rigs. Best thing for a dig is a two-ESC system and a good 4 channel radio. I tried the Spektrum DX4S and didn't care for it. The Airtronics MT-4 or a Futaba would be a better choice as there is full adjustability in both. With the proper components, you should be able to get more than enough steering. Improper tires and wheels can also impede steering.

All but 1 Pro rig that competes in MN is an XR10. When you run 2 ESC's and the right radio, an MOA is a trip to drive.

I can only recommend 1 radio and that's the Airtronics MT4. With the lever setup to run dig/burn, you will wonder why you ran anything else. I run two castle sidewinder micros. 2 years now and no problems. I have friends running brxl mini's and have had issues frying them. Don't know why, just something that happened.

Other than that, we have some pretty sick Shafty rigs that people own and bring to national comps. AX10 based (that's a loose statement as the plastic housings are about all that's AX10).

Dlux Berg axles are used by 1 guy here and he does well. Bully's have made an appearance but I can't say they were good or bad.

Just say no to Losi, unless you like to see snails pass you by on the rocks.

don't hate on losi's now. Robbob has a pretty sick chassis for those axles.
