Default Inexpensive build your own 1/10 truck

Back in the day I built an RC10 and a Blackfoot. Recently I built a 3S lipo SCX10 with minor upgrades in suspension as it broke lol. Half the fun to me is building the kit.

That said my 13 yo is about to have a birthday and I want to build a kit with him but don't want to spend the SCX 10 prices but want something somewhat capable that can at least keep up with mine a little. Everything I find is all Ready to run. What build kits are out there for either 2wd or 4wd trucks?

Agreed on the CC-01. They are a great little truck at a great price, especially when you get them from Tower with the coupon codes. After I finish my next SCX build I will be getting another CC-01 for me to build.

Is it just me or the scale of the CC-01 much smaller than the SCX 10?

yeah it seems like most the tamiya stuff is closer to 1/12th scale.

You could get a RTR SCX10 and tear it apart and put it back togeather with him. I always tear down a RTR and put it back togeather when i first get it. I do that to get the fun of building like you do with a kit. And then i have piece of mind that everything was put togeather and lubed as it should be.

That looks nice. I am pro ably leaning towards the cc-01. I do wish it was slightly larger but the price is right and seems to have a good aftermarket. I have an old new bright 1/10 scale jeep hard body I wanted to use but I am thinking it will be too big.

X2, lots of great scale Tamiya bodies drop right on if you want to change the look. Cheap, durable, fun to build, drive and decently capable.

The CC-01 is a very nice looking truck. Nobody does lexan and hard body shells better than Tamiya. But they are not even close to an SCX10 in terms of capabilities in stock form. With a few mods you can make them much more capable. I've been shocked by the performance of a friend's out on the trail. And you're not going to get anything close for under $150 with a motor and ESC. You'll just have to add your controller/receiver and servo.

CC-01 kit comes with Tamiya ESC and silver can motor, just fine for starting out and/or trail truck.

Yes, it does. That's what I was getting at with my post, but after rereading it I can see how it's confusing.

But that just triggered my memory. The 27T motor is often way too fast for trailing let alone crawling.

With a 55t my cc01 is just slightly faster than my scx10 with a 27t. 27t in a cc01 makes for a fun little basher

That's what I had in my CC-01 - 55T. The good thing is you can get a silver can motor from RC4WD for $10 so it doesn't take much to get the CC-01 down to trail speed.

What happens if you go short WB scx10 conversion. Does it become so short that it is unstable?

Short wheelbase really hurts in climbs, but you gain in other areas like breakover angle.

I've seen some pretty capable SWB SCX10's on the trail.

Very cool. Check the CC-01 section for lots of free or inexpensive mods. OSRC's threads, in particular, are always worth checking out.

Before you build it, get an aluminum steering kit
