Default info for a new build

hi guys lets have some fun !!!!

a buddy wants me to build him a nasty fast powerful rig.
wants to tear up the ground, race up hills, jump, mostly off and some
on road.

he likes to have the "best" and is willing to pay for it. who am I to talk him
out of it? he says he wants 1/5 but that seems a bit big for what he wants
but then I am more used to moas and he is talking shafty. I get to keep leftovers.
so a large 1/10 or maybe a 1/8?

so before I start a build thread, we need to settle on what axles to base
the build on. and since he want "solid", "bulletproof", and fast, with
some semblance to a real truck, I thought I would turn to you all to
get a shopping list started before I start the thread. any and al parts to be considered
as well as options such as chassis mounted servo as opposed to having the servo on the axle, etc.
links to suppliers would also be welcome. the sooner he starts buying the sooner I can start building.

no sense talking kits. I doubt there would be anything original left
by the time we finish.

I already mentioned 400.00 to 600.00 per axle and 200.00 to 250.00
for a tranny and he did not even blink an eye. same with servo, 100.00
got me a "is that all?".

so please serious suggestions. he and I will discuss the options
and I will start the build thread as the parts start rolling in.

oh yes .... black chevy king cab to match his ride.

ok lets do it ......

So he wants a unicorn? No among of money will fix physics, so if he wants fast I doubt he's gonna get a hard body. Plus it wouldn't last very long with jumps and rollovers. So I think the Proline lean quad cab Chevy body is a good choice. That now limits you to wheelbase and size of the overall truck. I'd probably use SCX2 Curries if he wants scale, or the original SCX Curries for arguably more strength right now. MIP driveshafts, Shafty Bombproof trans, Holmes Puller Pro 3500kv motor, MMX or the new a Mamba X for an ESC. That's the toughest stuff I know of (at least have read about).

Ar60's have their place and can stand up to some abuse but they aren't the best option available. Look into Kyosho Foxx axles with a bomb proof trans from supershafty. They use 1/8 scale gears and huge axle shafts. 6s all day long.

I'm running ar60's with a 2350 4 pole sensored motor on 4s and with 19/52 gearing on an scx trans it is a fawking riot! It crawls decent and has more than enough power to blow parts all over the place.

If he wants to go 5th scale, I'd get a vekta5, looks totally badass and you aren't going to build anything this nice for the money.

thanks WT food for thought

they look impressive (the rtrs) and decent price as well.
looks like we can add a second motor ..... mmmmm haha
have to look for just the axles to see if they are available

noticed that supershafty is out of stock on a lot of their products like the transmissions.

Here's a link to one that somebody put together with a brushless system.
Muttly's Kraken Vekta.5 Brushless Version - Vekta.5 Forums

Also on the subject of kyosho axles, I have a few sets and they are by far the most robust solid axles in this size range. I love them, but I wouldn't recommend them for anybody that doesn't want to tinker/shim/shave/reinforce and generally modify. Also aftermarket support is all but dead for them, and information on them is spread out to the four corners of the internet.

If you just wanted to grab a foxx - madforce ve, and bash it around, it's a great truck.

Good Luck!

Maybe a 1/8 scale buggy or truggy would fit what he wants better than a crawler based rig.?? Just a thought.

need to source out an aluminum fabricator/machinist

the clutch/tranny front mounting plate on the vetka5 can be filled in and ground then machined
for a huge brushless motor 5mm or even 8mm shaft slot and adjusting/mounting screw slots
no one around here I can ask

thanks again guys

From what I've seen Arrma RC makes some nice AWD basher trucks.

I've seen the Senton 6S BLX (short course body) run out in the desert and it took lots of abuse, just make sure to upgrade servo horn to aluminum, other than that pretty bullet proof and good handling!
ARRMA SENTON BLX 1/10 Scale 4WD R/C Short Course - Designed Fast, Designed Tough

Arrma Nero Big Rock 6S BLX (Chevy bodied monster truck, with remote lockable diffs)
ARRMA NERO BIG ROCK 6S BLX 1/8 Scale 4WD Monster Truck with 4 Beast Modes - Designed Fast, Designed Tough

Outcast 6S BLX (Chevy bodied stunt truck, non-locking fluid filled diffs)
ARRMA OUTCAST BLX 1/8 Scale 4WD R/C Monster Truck - Designed Fast, Designed Tough

But if you want larger scale, might as well go with Traxxas X-Maxx, now with upgraded 8S capabled ESC, motor and diffs. Loved my T-Maxx once I got it all dialed in, very worry free unless I hit an immovable object at speed lol.

hahaha natedog

I had an older emaxx I'm rebuilt and then sold it to build up a newer emaxx with a huge motor running 4s
this buddy liked it fine - fast enough but the tires were too soft and was hard to steer at speed.
he would borrow it and run it till he broke something. after the third time it cost me over 150.00 for arms and braces
I sold it in parts. kept the motor and esc for something mean.

this motor will not bolt on to a standard axial tranny it is so big. ill pull it out and get a picture 5mm shaft I think.

Kershaw Designs: They make, modify or are vendors for single and dual motors and parts that will power most anything up to and including a Vactra Kraken:

thanks durok for that link

I have seen this conversion and it has a couple of negative points.
it mounts the motor on the other side than the clutch as well as above the level of the drive shafts so the weight
is a bit high. also because it is on that side it limits the size of the motor or it hits the steering servo.

one home made mount has the motor where the clutch was and there is plenty of room. that guy is using
a motor with a 10mm shaft !!!!! he claims that the losi guys break the motors with 8mm shafts on jumps. haha

another home made mount, that guy just cut out the side of the front bulkhead where the clutch was and had
a mount bolted to the pan for his motor. I think that was also a one of fab.

interesting stuff

the kit without a motor or servos goes for about 1200.00 rtr for about 1800.

Length:34.8in (884mm)
Width: 22.83in (580mm)
Height: 12.60in (320mm)
Ground Clearance: 1.97in (50mm) adjustable to 3.98in (100mm)
Wheelbase: *23.94in (608mm)
Weight: 37.8*lbs (17.14 kg) - Without Motor
Main Chassis: 5mm thick 6061 T6 aluminum

I definitely see the appeal...

Other than the fact that it is gas-powered, I've been a fan of the Vectra Kraken since it was released, it's a ridiculously over-the-top rig inspired by Shannon Wheeler's KOH buggy - a very menacing-looking rig indeed.

I really wish they would make a smaller electric version as well, because it is really too big and pricey for me to consider purchasing for myself. A true exotic in the world of R/C. There are some lucky owners of one here on this forum...

BTW - I bought one of the very first T-Maxxes for sale in Texas - drove from Austin to the Woodlands outside of Houston just to pick it up.

When I decided to get out of nitro power, I picked up a E-Maxx and ran HPI low-profile pin tires on ultra-light disc wheels that really woke up the handling - I enjoyed it a great deal.

But after losing all my R/C vehicles in a fire I lost interest in the hobby for many years and now that I am starting back up I'm not a fan of completely unrealistic-looking machines.

It'll be fun to see what you end up building!

Yeah, this.

I love my scale trucks but nothing has the performance and durability combination like 1/8 scale racing machines. Just about any kit from the big manufacturers (Tekno, TLR, Associated, Kyosho, Xray, Mugen, and some others) is near bulletproof out of the box. Your buddy can get 40+ MPH offroad performance with predictable handling all the way up to top speed, the ability to survive 20+ ft jumps repeatedly, and, with a 6S battery and tire swap, a 70+ mph onroad rocket from a single vehicle.

If it still has to be scale and bulletproof, start sending money to Dlux for some 1808 axles and one of his new transmissions.
