Personally, I love my K10 Ascender... "Torque-twist" issues and all... (Doesn't really bother me)

Jato, I appreciate the Devil's Advocate. I like Axial the trucks and RTRs and aftermarket support, makes them easy mode. I will give another looksie at the Ascender. But my LHS barely sticks Axial parts, let alone crawler or Vaterra parts.

Time to stop relying on your LHS, if they don't support your niche of the hobby... Go online, can get most stuff within a week or two at the most. |

It's still just a Coke vs. Pepsi vs. Sam's Choice vs. etc. Some fan boys of one brand are gonna claim the others are overrated, overpriced, etc. Just get one, try it, and even if you like it or don't like it, don't be afraid to try a different make next time. Quote:
That said, dealing with a LHS can be just frustrating, too.

Also Vaterra's materials are very strong, you likely wouldn't even need replacement parts unless something weird/extreme happened. Lots of guys run bone stock Ascender chassis...

I buy what I can from the LHS. It's frustrating when I go in and ask for a 130mm drive shaft for a 5mm output and they say, what vehicle is that on? Then, it's well we can order that for you. If they would just let me look thru their driveshaft bin and see if I can find something. Most of the time I'm ok paying $5 to get back on the road, then I can order some MIPs or whatever later.

Customer: I need a set of wiper blades for '07 Silverado. Cashier: Is that a long or short bed? crew cab or standard? 4.8L, the 5.3L, or the 6.0L? what trim: LS, LT, or LTZ? Customer: To be (semi) fair, most of the retail staff, auto parts, LHS, or otherwise, only know how to look up things by the part number and have no idea about the actual parts.

My visit to the LHS, or pretty much any specialty retailer these days... Me: "I need a [such-and-such] for my [whatever it is]" Sales clerk: "We don't stock that particular part but we can order it for you." Me: "I can order it too, but I came here to buy it from you." Sales clerk: "Well unfortunately we can't stock everything." Me: "Thanks anyway." And retailers can't figure out why they're losing their clientele to the internet. [shrug] |

My last visit included such nuggets as "Liquid mask? What's that?" (and they actually did have some in stock, the 3rd employee I asked knew what and where it was - it was NOWHERE near paint or painting supplies) ...And having to explain just what exactly "Shock Shaft Pliers" were and what they did. (no luck, there) |

It may make me a bit of a dick (I swear I’m a nice guy for the most part), but when I run into these scenarios I ask where they might have muffler bearings, headlight oil and elbow grease. The responses are always good for a chuckle if you’re having a bad day!

I used to work in the parts dept of a John Deere dealership then later at a NAPA store and to be fair, no part store (or hobby shop for that matter) can physically stock every part for every car. Also, the parts computer software has been written to search by year, make and model and there is not a lot the counter person can do about that. That said, there are far too many counter people these days that have no idea what parts are what and with out a computer they would have no idea what they were looking up. So I have seen both sides of that parts counter and tend to be a bit more forgiving. I also order 90% of my parts on-line these days.

I was also a counter-person at a parts house, a Dodge and Mazda dealership in the 70's. We never had anything in stock then either - just the most popular items, like for tune ups and such. A dealer never stocks that much, and certainly no body parts. But we got good at looking them up in old paper catalogs and later on micro fiche. Ah, the age of computers... |

Yeah, I worked for NAPA for a short time, at least the customers were better Brained!! I endured 5 weeks at AutoZone (!!!) I HATED being smarter than the IDIOT who wrote the POS Program!! The guy who worked next to me was a "team player"... A customer came in one day and asked for 2 feet of 11/32" vacuum hose. While that Muff was asking about year, make, model..... I ran to the back, cut 2 feet of hose, came back and said "here you go, Sir." That really wasn't for me. I was a Line Tech, and used to fix Jet Engines in the Air Force! AutoBone turned out to be VERY temporary. I haven't run into much of that madness at Hobby Shops though.... * Back on subject, a reasonably inexpensive Rig, that ended up being so good, that the high-end Aftermarket even makes some upgrades for it.... The MST CFX-W. Like the CFX mentioned earlier, but with a 300mm wheelbase, and Portal Axles with Pumpkins roughly HALF the size of the CFX/CMX, which are really designed towards all the guys who are SICK of trying to make their CC-01's crawl, because they fit most Tamiya Bodies perfectly! |
