Default New guy wanting to build a kit

Hi there, I'm new to the forum so hello to you all!

I started RC about 6 months ago with a Traxxas Slash 4x4 and brushed Stampede 4x4's for my kids. Also have a brushless Stampede. We're loving the hobby so far, especially my eight year old daughter.

One thing i really enjoy is fixing them when they break and I'm thinking that I'd like to build a kit.

It probably wouldn't be a slow crawler, as i don't really have a place to do that but i do live next to woods with rock and gravel trails and jumps so i'm thinking of a rock racer type thing. I've looked at the Axial stuff, i do like the look of the yeti and bomber but don't know if they're too slow especially as i'm only using NiMh.

I run my Slash 4x4 on 5000mah NiMh, haven't gone to Lipo, and it's plenty fast for me, doesn't even need to be that fast. What i sometimes don't like about the slash is it's low ride height but that's only when i'm bashing with my daughter and her MT is kicking my but in terms if where she can go! On the dirt trails it's awesome.

So can anyone offer any advice on a kit to go for? And if there are anythings about that kit that i should upgrade before building?

I should add that I'm in the UK which, as usual, may limit my options.

Sorry for the long post!

Cheers
Dave

I believe that the general consensus is that the Bomber is the best rock-racery thing Axial offers. Yeti has many flaws both construction and handling-wise, and the Wraith is an older design, less suited for speed than the Bomber (which comes with a sway bar in the kit version, metal tranny innards etc).
The NiMH limitation... why? Most "faster" systems nowadays run at 3s (12.6V full) or even 4s voltages. Even crawlers go with the "volt up, gear down" mantra. Safety concerns?
Then there's the Losi Rock Rey and Gmade GOM rock racer, but you need to be aware that aftermarket and part support is nowhere near Axial stuff.

Be aware that your 4x4 Slash will outhandle and outjump all of these.

Disclaimer: I only own a fairly modded Wraith, but spend considerable time researching this stuff. I still like the looks of the Yeti best, but went with a Wraith anyway.

Bristolian welcome. Think there's a few guys that way that enjoy a good bash.

Kit wise I think you'll be mostly recommend the Bomber kit as you can then get some decent electronics in it to aid a good tear around your forests, and should the desire befall you can crawl very well.
Martin over at RCbitz is a really good Axial stockist so he'd be able to set you up on spares etc.
Other than that there's a good write up comparing the Losi Rock Rey, yeti and bomber very recently which may give you more details to choose on.
If you've not discovered already MSUK forum is very active for us in blighty

Welcome to the site and the awesome and addicting world of RC!

I love my Bomber. It's easily the best Axial vehicle IMO. While the stock Bomber is awesome it could get boring unless you have some extreme terrain to challenge it and its big 2.2 tires. It jumps OK, but not great since it's front heavy. And it doesn't handle the best since it's a solid axle rig. You just have to be aware of that so you don't have unrealistic expectations.

The Traxxas TRX-4 would also be a good option for you IMO, but it's more of a trail truck than a rock racer. It can go slow and crawl, but it can also go and fast and jump.

Here are two video of my Bomber with a Castle Mamba Monster X ESC and Tekin ROC412 on 2S and small bits of 3S. With a Bomber you have to spend a lot of money on electronics IMO to get the most out of it.

That's the one, cheers Stomper
Death's write up is superb in my opinion, really nice comparison which is (almost) forcing me into another purchase with the Rock Rey. Damn you!!!!

There are a couple guys that have Twin Hammers built "just right" to where they really love crawling with them.

I've read other posts where other owners couldn't get them running to where they liked the performance.

Browsing the Twin Hammers section would be best if going that route - they are priced well!

The sub-forum:

...and an awesome example of a properly built version:

I own a bomber wraith and yeti. I’ve built all of them from a kit and imo the only one well suited for speed is the yeti. The yeti is really prone to breakage though. My favorite car is my Losi SCTE 3.0. I built it with super thick diff oil and I absolutely love it! IMO it is one of the best kits ever made.

I have a bomber kit and a Rock Rey Kit. I love them both. Sensored brushless in both. Two completely different animals though. Rock Rey kit is on sale on Horizon hobby website for $250!

Yes! I'm so tempted! But I'm saving for a Mustang GT350.

I saw a brand new, kit version of the Rock Rey built at a hobby shop. They built it and had it for sale. It was awesome. At $250 I'd probably choose the Rock Rey over the Bomber. Losi makes fun and durable stuff.
