SSD Rock Rey/Baja Rey Third Member bearing fitment

Hi all

I just received the SSD Rock Rey/Baja Rey Third Member and on the front side the bearing was a tight fit but I lined it up and it seated with 4 - 5 taps of a rubber mallet.

Getting the bearing to go in straight and/or get seated on the back side has been a pain. I have already ruined two bearings and it still isn't seating fully. The first bearing in about a third of the way and then I tapped it out to start over. The second time the bearing seems like it is almost seated but there is still a small gap I can see underneath.

I tried freezing the part to tap the current bearing out to start over trying some anti-seize and/or light sanding on the part but now the bearing won't budge. I'm a little concerned if I keep tapping the bearing out I will damage the bearing seat or some other part of the third member.

At this point I am wondering if I should try and exchange for another SSD third member since the bearing seat tolerances seemed so far off between the front and back bearing.

Bearing seats should have very tight tolerances. But you have to ensure the bearing does in perfectly flat/straight or it will get stuck like you are experiencing.

Do you have a set of calipers? If so measure the inside diameter of the bearing seats on both sides. They should measure the same. If not you could have an issue with the part, but it sounds more like an installation issue.

I don't have any calipers, been meaning to buy a set lately maybe this is a good time. It seems strange the the front bearing would go in fairly easy and the rear bearing would be such a PIA using the same method twice.

Any best suggestions on how to get the bearing out without damaging the part?

Thanks for the assistance! "thumbsup"

The only way to get the bearing out is to pull it. If I were you I'd contact SSD before you do anything. PM him on here.

I have replied in PM.

Just FYI, using calipers will not give an accurate enough reading on bearing housing ID as the caliper ends are not sharp enough for the curve. Yhey will always be a fraction off.

Yep, thanks for the fast reply! One of several reasons I buy SSD products and will continue to do so. Nice designs and great product support. "thumbsup"

I will find out later today if using the recommended standard installation procedure allows me to reinstall a new bearing or not.

Well, was able to install the inner/rear bearing. It took two tries to get it seated fully that bugger is TIGHT!

Thanks for the help. Next up is to install the SSD front bulkhead. I imagine that install will be a bit easier (other than getting access to the part on this vehicle.)

For the future, throw the bearing in a freezer for a few hours before you install it the cold usually shrinks it just enough to buy an easier install.

Can someone tell me what bearings to get for this ssd third member? I got the fast eddy bearings and they do not fit being the bearings are bigger
