Secure Storage Box

For those of you who like to pack your crawler when heading out on vacation, what do you use as a storage box?

I do a lot of camping, and look forward to having my crawler along with me. But, it is a somewhat bulky item, so the most convenient spot for it will be the bed of my pickup truck. I will often have a canoe rack installed, or bicycles in the bed, which means my soft tonneau cover will be rolled up. Thus, security is a concern.

So, I'd like a box for my crawler, radio, and charger that is:

-Water resistant
-Lockable (padlock would be fine)
-Can be locked to the bed tie down points with a cable or chain. Plastic or metal construction acceptable.
-Fits a 1/10th scale crawler reasonably tightly
-Target cost, under $100. Willing to wait for a sale.

Looking for suggestions.
Thanks!

I guess it really depends on how much you want to spend, how much room you're willing to give up, and how firmly you want it attached? I could see a Rubbermaid Action Packer box at the light end, stepping up to an aluminum "under bed" tool box (as commonly seen on big rigs.) Might be a good time to start looking into more traditional truck bed toolbox's, a "porkchop" style box (fits over the wheel well) would keep the center of the bed free, if you could find one with enough width.

It could certainly serve other purposes as well I suspect.

I'd definitely be looking to spend under $100, but am happy to wait for a good sale if needed. My anti-theft approach is mostly just to make it so a dumb 9 year old can't simply open a latch, and walk away with your valuable stuff. In general, if somebody is motivated, and has access to tools, they will defeat most locking devices.

I don't want something that is a permanent fixture in the truck. I like to have access to the full bed without removing things first, and I like everything to be movable, so I can Tetris everything into place.

you can also check into "pelican boxes" which are designed for weapons and other military grade optics and such, come in a multitude of sizes, but theyre not cheap.

On the floor under your dinette in the trailer. That's where mine go in the RV if the overhead bins are full. ;-)

I picked up a couple of “Pelican” style boxes at SamsClub a while back. I keep a couple of micros in one with spare tires and basic tools. Lipos and chargers go into another smaller one. Transmitter stays in the cab somewhere under a seat.

If you took out the padding from the SamsClub box, a 1/10 may fit with the shocks detached from the body and wheels removed.

Academy has a few smaller, square footlocker style boxes. This may be an option as well.

Pelican 1640. Its a little more then twice your budget but will outlive you. also has a roller handle because it will get heavy. you can fit 2 1/10th scale trucks, radios, batteries, charger, and tools.

Yup. Try to find a used pelican box and it would be PERFECT.

Good point.

OP, any military bases nearby? Check there first for the big ones.

Flea markets near military installations yield the best deals. Picked up a couple nice ones for pennies on the dollar compared to retail

In any case, that's a very sweet setup! "thumbsup""thumbsup"

It was not me. I just got the Sierra in the fall.

We did take one trip to Pennsylvania last spring, but I was towing with an orange GMC Canyon.

My wife, two dogs, and myself love our little camping setup. It’s easy to tow and park, which gives us better selection of campsites to chose from. The trailer keeps us comfortable and dry. We generally go camping to enjoy the outdoors, so we don’t need much indoor living space.

Here’s a link to my camping blog if anybody feels like scrolling through some pictures, or reading my long winded trip reports.

That is super cool...it looks like it was the same trailer. Remember the back being open while they were taking care of the dogs. Awesome set-up!!

I use a large Tupperware type bin when we go camping for the RC's, it goes with us in the bed of the truck with everything else during the trip, but gets locked inside the truck when not being used.
