| Transverse motor mounted chassis?
Is there any high quality 1/10 trail/crawler kit out there that has the motor mounted transversely to the chassis? It doesn't seem to be a very popular motor layout.

Only rigs I can think of are Motor on axle rigs(MOA) and as they are twin motor. Typically a motor is longitudinaly mounted, either in the front or center of the rig. A transverse motor would require a 90* change to a transfer case to another 90* change to the axles, not an efficient setup. |

I dont think I've ever seen this on a non crawler (EDIT: thats not an MOA). Packaging wise its more work to do because you need to change the direction that the drivetrain is rotating by 90 degrees. It could be done but it would be a custom affair. I have wondered what it would be like to have the motor rotate the direction that pushed the front end down. But how to pull this off while making it durable and simple is beyond me right now. EDIT: there is the Tamiya Konghead which I wouldnt call a crawler but it uses a very odd method of transmitting the power from a transversely mounted motor. Instead of bevel gears it uses many, many gears that run the length of the chassis to just connect the front and back. Last edited by HumboldtEF; 08-15-2020 at 06:22 PM. |

I didn't think about that. More gears involved = more complexity, which can make the drive train less reliable, as well as reducing efficiency. Only kit I've come across looking online is called HG P402. But I've never heard of this brand before. Last edited by usert_l; 08-15-2020 at 09:04 PM. |

Transverse setups are fairly popular in buggies and on road cars, but they use a belts to transfer power to the diffs. Transverse is actually a lot more efficient, and you don't have any of the chassis twist from the motor torque. This setup would work on an independant suspension rig, where the diffs are mounted on the chassis. On a live axle rig the belts would loosen and you'd lose power.

Just saw an unboxing video of the Losi LMT. Looks like it has a transverse motor setup. If anyone is interested in solid axle monster trucks you should go check it out.

I believe some of the early Cross designs had traversely mounted motors. I personally don't see any advantage if still using shaft drive to the axles. Totally makes sense for belt drive. Not sure what to think of the Losi monster truck center trans. I like the idea of having a sealed center diff, but on the other hand the motor location seems unessicerly high. |
