| Austar 313 scx10 ii knock off
Has anyone built one of these. Looking for a cheap crawler to play around with and not looking for anything special. Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk |

I got myself one. Gearbox, chassis and links all usable. Could not handle the flex of the plastic. The pinion doesn’t run on a bearing on the inside of the case either. I stripped them for parts and dumped the housings. HG P402 axles are much better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The austar axle isn’t scx10.2. The only thing that was aff a 10.2 on mine were the rear axle shafts. The front used 10.1 cvd’s. Spur and pinion is wltoys with a locker. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My friend picked up a trail honcho today and we went for a hike. The austar did pretty well. The only complaint I have is I got stuck in a tree stump and stripped out the hex in the back of the rear rim. Good thing I had a spare. Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk |

My impressions so far: The GOOD: The chassis is well made and assembled correctly. I checked the diffs and gearbox which were nicely pre-greased. I thought the plastic parts are of decent quality and it was nice to find a metal battery tray that adds stiffness to the assembly. Wheels are nice plastic beadlocks and tires are Hirax clones that I've used to good effect on other crawlers. The BAD: The front suspension is a FOUR link design, but the servo is chassis mounted, which doesn't make any sense because of the massive "bump-steer" such an arrangement entails. They should've either mounted the steering servo on the axel or gone with a THREE link and Panhard rod front suspension arrangement. I had a spare set of SCX10 II front shock hoops lying around, so used them to create a 3-link setup. Fortunately, the front axle has a lug on which to mount a Panhard rod, so I modified the supplied shock hoop brace to use as a Panhard rod and solve the bump-steer problem. I've since test driven the chassis and all works as it should with these mods, but per comment above, would only recommend this chassis to modelers that have enuf experience and enjoy digging in and modifying their rigs. That sais, for 110 bucks currently at Walmart (wheels/tires included) it's a hell of a bargain IMO. https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/388421189 |
