Default Axles for comp build? (Trx4 axles fit sherpa?)

I’m looking for axles for a THG Sherpa comp build, I have half a set of TRX4 axles, so that would be my preferred choice, but I’m worried about comparability issues with the Sherpa chassis.

I also have a mix and match of ar44 parts, which is also an option, but I’d like to use portal axles.

The trx4 axle may end up going on another build, so other axle suggestions are welcome. From what I’ve seen, ar44s are a popular option and has a really tight turning radius, but would the trx4 axles be much of a disadvantage? Thanks

SSD is my go to for portal axles and the parts marry up to ar44 axles. And one of the nice things about SSD portal is the gears within the portal can be flipped to change your reduction to a over drive or a under drive. for each axle. I have even done a mod to do a offset on the front portals.
This build shows how I did it.

Hey, i still have that truck. I think ive put maybe 10 min run time on it. The only marks on it are a couple scuffs on the skid. It sits on the shelf lookin all purdy now

Probably because they’re Indestructible. Or maybe because they’re super easy to find.

Advantages. Clearance, Strength, gear reduction, avaialbe, wider for stability,

Disadvantages. steering and bigger portal, wider and harder to clear gates.

I use them on my 4ws C3, probably not axles I would choose for a C2 or C3 build but people do. You can file the knuckles and get them to steer better.

Because they have a 2.56:1 portal ratio and almost no torque twist.

But they have serious steering issues .. I'd rather avoid that than torque twist.

Indestructible!!! hummmm I have broken axle shafts with stock electronics on my TRX4 sport due to the limited angle. They are easy to find parts but the portal boxes and knuckles are bulky. I recently build a HH sherpa but i used the f10's off a Phoenix. they are such a great set of axles. If you are building a comp rig these axles got to be the best bang for your buck ... they are nice, smooth, portaled, high clearance pinion, weighted. quality. and not overly priced for what they are.

I agree here except for my C3. With some grinding, 4ws and the rear selectable locker it can almost turn in place. But nothing I would chooses for my C1 or C2. People do run them and unless the coarse is tight they do great.

I've built a 'comp' rig that I run in local comps. STH chassis and just the basics. It uses X4 axles and it's a regular top three finisher. I agree that steering is limited but for the majority (99%) of comps it isn't an issue. With some effort, the steering can be improved but the caster/pinion angle is problematic. (Traxxas should correct that.)

I also have a 'full blown comp' rig. lol CCW chassis, custom this that and the other thing, and it has the F10 axles. I have to agree with Speedy Triple on the F10's. For the price they are absolutely amazing. They beat the X4 axles imo because they are around the same price, are easy to get, they can be bought individually, and they have the caster built in which makes the steering awesome. After several months of running them, torque twist is not an issue at all.

I saw these 1/8 axels and thought about this thread

Heavy Duty YIKONG Brass Counterweights Portal Axle

86 Euro for a brass front axel, so you could make it all wheel steering?

I guess it depend on where you comp. I do mostly indoor and things can get tight. You can file the knuckles a bit on the TRXs and gain turning.

My C2 has AR45 and turn great but already have a crack where the links mount. Maybe 3 comps and some practice/tuning. New case is only about $12. I did have a kink end break and I suppose that could have added to it. But in almost 3 years I have no breakable issues (other than a shafts because of increased steering and the chromoly shafts fixed that) with my TRX axles.

My C1 has SSD diamonds (AR44) with SSD hubs. I have gone through the 1 piece ar44, twisted tubes on the SSD, a few axles and a set of hubs within 2 years. But they turn like an mm ffer.

How heavy are the F10s compared to the AR45s?
