Default New Axle Project

I have started collecting parts for locked out Savage axles. Pretty much what everyone is doing with Maxx axles but with beefier drivetrain components. They will be easy to lock the position shown, the steering will be the hardest part. The easiest way to do the steering would be to use a servo for each tire, Rx power reqirements would escalate dramaticly though. I don`t know if these will work very well with my current chassis without raising the COG too high, if not I guess this will be a second crawler project.
The Savage axle in the pic is setting on a standard sized coffee mug.
Thoughts, opinions ??

I dont think one servo per tire is necessary. Just mount the servo in the middle and have two tierods, one to each tire, kind of like this

Well....you get the idea. I have seen some other Maxx Hybrid axles set up like that. Search a lil'

Yes, I know that a servo per tire is not nessasary, but I`ve not seen it done and kinda want to know if would work. The best way to do that is try it, right ? Anyway, I was realy just throwing out an idea on the steering, guess I`ll cross that bridge when I get there.

Ive been planning the same setup but in aluminum. Hopefully if everything goes well Ill braze 1" tube to the diff case and make tabs to mount the uprights.

For the steering I was going to use one xtm torque punisher servo 175oz./4.8v. Do you think one can turn Jumbo Kongs?
If not it shouldnt be to difficult to mount one servo on each side and run a turn buckle to each upright and use a Y connecter for juice.
For one servo steering, mount the servo on one side. Make the drag link go from the servo arm to the opposite spindle. Then make the other link go between the servo side spindle and a point on the draglink. Drill a hole in the drag link, thread it and screw a rod end to it or a ball socket and ball cup.

4Xadict, I had a very similar idea. I actually bought a Savage, stripped it of it's supension and diffs, then re-sold what was left over. I plan on using a Tamiya King Hauler tranny (locked in 1st). Total gear reduction would be about 130:1, before the tires offset it by some. Hard part will be connecting the Tamiya tranny to the HPI diffs. I haven't done anything permamnent for servo mounts yet,. Don't be afraid to get creative!! Vince
