Default Driveshaft slip joint travel?

On a crawler with alot of wheel travel, how much slip would a guy need? I've given alot of thought about just using maxx sliders and may end up using them at first. I'd kinda like to try and build some custom shafts though. I'm just guessing here but would 1" of slip be enough? Or would that be to much

Just curious what others are doing for slip joints in their shafts and how long they are.

Thanks

I think 1" of slip would be plenty on most crawlers. On Tater-Tot which is now at 16.5" WB my Maxx sliders only use up about 1/2" of slip at most. My drivelines are nearly flat and my droop is limited to help keep the beast under control and from over flexing...even though I can get it almost to a full 90* of articulation now

So, yeah... 1" should be plenty.

my Widow only uses about 1/4" of the slip on my maxx sliders for my driveshafts.

yeah but i can get 11.5" under one tire while the rest are planted. so i say thats pretty big the only time your shaft will use the slip is when the whole axle moves up and down and not when it just twists ( flexing)..i can twist the axle up and down( 1 up and one down) as if it were flexing out both sides and the DS doesn't slide hardly at all..it only moves when the axle goes up and down

I can get 13.5" before a tire lifts.... and I run Kongs Although it's useless with that much on my rig, it's at 90* of articulation and that's only going to cause me problems on the rocks.

Are you saying that when the axles moves straight up and down(not flexing it) it only uses 1/4"? Or is that during flex and it uses a little more when you, say, jump it or anything to get the axle to fall straight down?

Thanks everybody

like when i jump or if it starts to wheel hop.. the only time mine will move is during that time when the axle moves up and down..

now during flex, you ould hold the chassis in one hand and twist up the rear ( or front) axle to simulate flex, and the shaft will not slide in or out..it may just a **** hair, but thats only due to the axle dropping some during that time...i'll BRB with a couple pics if i can( battery is almost dead in camera) if not, i will post some up later for ya

TOYO- has anyone called you a smartass today yeah i can go more, but like ya said, it only causes problems and i really don't see a need for that much articulation ya ramp queen

are you serious?? ok actually maybe you are..just messin with ya. . when we are talking about slip for the driveshaft, its the amount the driveshaft travels in and out of each other..you have 2 basic parts that make up a maxx slider driveshaft- a female and a male..the slip is how much the male slides in and out of her( i mean the female end )

The slip joint in the driveshaft is the one joint thats kept slippery with grease so it'll slide on the rocks better.

Got the pics. Thanks a bunch. Looks like I'll need less slip joint grease than I was thinking.

no problem...yeah like i said in the email, if ya look close, you can see the wear marks on them. it maybe only moves a 1/4" for all the travel i have. if you ever have a problem with them twisting, you could always lengthen them and just leave 1/4" or however much yours move. that way it doesn't really show enough splin to twist
