Default 2wd and 4wd

Hello everyone,

I am starting a scale build that I would like to be able to go from 2wd to 4wd while driving. I know I could do it with a RC4WD R2D mounted backwords but that locks up the front axle and I want it to still spin freely while the power goes to the rear axle. Any one have any suggestions? If anyone has any pictures or videos please share them.

Thanks,
Justin

Pretty common I'm considering doing that myself. Any dig system could be directed to the front wheels would accomplish that nicely. I've seen a couple threads I think it's a realistic set up for anyone who is interested in playing around with the difference in preformance. For legal Scale Competition I think it's fine as long as it doesn't lock up the front wheels as a front wheel dig but I'm not sure. Someone asked that question prior to last years Tamiya/MSD Scale Nationals I don't remember seeing the answer for me that is a important issue.

I thought a dig still locked one axle while one got the power?

2 sollutions... adjust your EPA's so that it only goes to freewheel and not all the way to lock. Or, cut the dig lockouts off or fill the slots with something like JB weld.

dig has 3 positions, locked, freewheel and engaged.

for something like this though you could go oldschool with a sliding center driveshaft decoupler

male on the axle, male on the trans, female center section with a wide shock preload clip with a glued in ring on each end connected to a servo

Haha, i agree with jetboat. JB weld is great stuff. So it sounds like ill be getting a dig setup then. If any one could post up some picks of the set up that hairba11 was talking about it would be great.

Thanks,
Justin

I have a R2D on my Hilux for the 2WD/4WD options. I just don't switch into the lock position, unless I wanna do a "linelock" burn out.

So the R2D has the option to be locked or free spin?

yes, like hairba11 said the dig has 3 positions engaged, freewheel and locked. You can seclect between engaged and freewheel without worrying about the lock position.

that would be me that asked the question before the scale nats.
and yes, it was fine as long as it didnt lock the front tires up.
since then i have taken it out, it didnt help with the steering it was actually worse, it pushed really bad not having the front tires pulling.

Are you using the R2D in any other projects ggooler? Would you be willing to get rid of it?

Just trying to get a feel for the prices of used R2Ds, RC4wd is out of stock right now. Plus I would rather have a used one to save some cash.

I'm putting together a project now with the rc4wd bruiser trans,

"it didnt help with the steering it was actually worse, it pushed really bad not having the front tires pulling."

this doesn't make me feel better about it.

was it at least cool to be able to shift into 4wd mode?

I just wish the thing was 2Hi 4Med 4Low instead of 2Hi 2Med and 4Low

it was okay for awhile to get some reactions from it. and was able to do some better burnouts too. but for performance nope.
