1983 SR5 4x4 scaler questions http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...75/1983SR5.jpg I am using the truck i had years ago as my inspiration for this build. I had a 1983 SR5 4x4 with 7" of lift and 38" Super Swampers. I would give anything to have that truck back, but it is long gone. I figure the next best thing would be to build a scaler as close as possible. I have read through a ton of the threads on these forums, as well as some others, but can't decide which way to go about starting. I don't have an unlimited budget, but would just like to see what you guys thought would be a good starting point. Thanks in advance. **Edit** I am a racer and new to the crawler world, so take it easy on me. |
SCX10 kit, tamiya hilux body, RC4WD scale tires of your choice, RcBros leaf spring kit and electronics to support your budget. Do some searching on those and you'll be set. |
I'd say that at least use the SCX-10 chassis. RC4WD makes some very nice scale axles based on the Toyota design. Your old 1:1 rig looks nice, I had a '83 base model truck that I miss, although I could probably never fit behind the wheel of that truck any more! |

I would go with a new RTR Trail Ready Dingo SCX10. Then buy a Hilux body and a set of tires and you will be set. The new RTR's come with a castle made esc and 2.4ghz radio gear, so if you go this route be sure you are getting the updated one not an older one that has been on a shelf for a while. The RTR has plastic links so you will want to upgrade them soon but that is a lot cheaper than getting a kit and buying the electronics."thumbsup" |
Consider going with either TLT axles or some of the narrower rc4wd axles. they'll fit under the body better (and more like your 1:1). This is mine with TLT axles: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...cab/0004-5.jpg |
Thanks. Your colors look pretty close to mine....."thumbsup" |
here is a build thread that i'm doing based off my old 83 toyota... http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/1-5-scale-rigs/290146-my-maggie.html i used a scx chassis and TLT axles...axial transmission and just went to town... built a smittybuilt style of rear bumper and sliders, using 1/4 steel tube. did the hands bros leaf spring kit and rc4wd springs... |
tlt axles will be a lot chaper on you then anything from rc4wd you spend more on a set of axles from them then your scx10 chassis but you should check out thier yota axles. |
