Unhappy Tamiya Hilux/Blazer axle mods. (Bruiser owners.. heelpp!)

Hey,

Is there anyone out there who has both some bruiser axles and some blazer axles?

I purchased a set of blazer axles not long ago thinking there wasnt much different apart from the locking hub. I have since decided I want to buy some bruiser wheels from rc4wd.com. Thing is when I saw a picture on ebay of these axles with those wheels and the hub locks I thought it looked kind of silly IMO. I started looking at their slotted rear bruiser hubs ( http://rc4wd.com/shop/product_info.p...roducts_id=951 )

I realise that the problem would be the fact that my axles have a shaft sticking out past the slot. I was wondering if anyone has done this, or thinks its possible to use these hubs on the blazer axles (front and rear), then trim down the excess sticking out and tapp it with a thread so I can just put a nut on there to hold the hub on (I am guessing this is how the bruiser axles work?).

Its so hard to find any real helpful information on these axles and the differences between them!

Thanks for any information in advance

Default What you need :)

Basically what you will need to do is buy Bruiser rear hubs. 4 of them if you want true 4wd, or 2 fronts/2 rears (fronts are only one ways). You will then need to buy the Bruiser half shafts that run through the knuckles. You may also want to upgrade to Bruiser knuckles while you are at it as the Blazing Blazer ones have a smaller "arm" coming off of them and I have scene plenty of them snapped off. I would also recommend doing bearings in the axles and shimming the pinion gears to obtain the best mesh. If you do go with rear hubs all around becareful wheeling the truck as the front axles could pop the ends off

let me know if you have any other questions, I have 6 3speeds, I know them like the back of my hand.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply! When you say I will need to buy the bruiser half shafts that run through the knuckles... do you mean the hub shafts? ( http://rc4wd.com/shop/product_info.p...roducts_id=176 ).

If so, do you know if the blazer's stock ones are hardened? Or could I just tap a thread on the end to match the bruiser style ones? (Instead of having the circlip & spacer)

I'm going to build a scale truck up from scratch but will probably be more of a shelf queen than a driver as I only have time now and again to drive them! So I probably wont have to worry too much about strength at this stage. I'm somewhat gentle with my crawlers ;)

Thanks for offering up some info, I really appreciate your time

Yup those are the ones you will need, not to sure if BB ones are hardened, I am going to say "no" as the parts werent the strongest to begin with. It sounds like alot of work to grind and tap etc. I would just get the Bruiser hub shafts and find yourself some nice Bruiser front or rear hubs and call it a day

Cool, the only issue with that would be the rear axles are the same as the fronts, so I'll have to either replace the rear axle completely or tap the ends with a thread anyway to get the hubs to stay on ;) I'll have to see what I can sort out, seems a shame to modify them like this but I dont have much left in my wallet with the cost of bruiser hubs, wheels, etc and a few other pieces from rc4wd.com ;)

With the rear axle just get the inner shaft (axle) and you will be set. You can also just get a set of bruiser axles and not even try and search for all the parts?? Or if you want it to look REAL get these from RC4WD:

http://rc4wd.com/shop/product_info.p...oducts_id=1189

Then you can use 2.2 tires and have something TRICK and DIIFFERENT and not have to get all the parts to convert it....

Hansolo, yeah I was looking at those wheels to begin with, but I saw a pic of a truck with them and the hub's just dont suit it. I'm pretty sure I can modify it easily enough to make them into bruiser axles. I will be buying some of those wheels but bruiser ones. Mike from rc4wd mentioned something about universal wheels which work on either axles, but when I asked him which ones were the universal ones I got no reply ;)

I spent far too much on the axles as it is, so I wont be buying a new rear inner axle, I'll just have to mod it

Hey all, Does anyone know how to remove the bushings from the axles? Do I have to remove the pinn's at each end of the axle so I can slide the bushings off? Or do the axles come apart as halve's ?

Thanks

Yea you have to press is out carefully. Use two 3mm tamiya flange nuts placed, flanged to flanged, around the front axle pin. Then Press it out in a vice. This wont be enough to press it all the way out but you should be able to get it almost out and knock the rest out with a small pick of a thin nail of some sort. The course backing on the nuts will grab into the vice and it wont slide around. You can use the nuts again to press it back in then. Just take your time doing it. Think of it as doing u joints on a drive shaft. Hope this helps.
