Default Shimming K44 axles

I'm getting ready to build my first real scaler. I purchased a set of K44 axles from another member here on the forum.

What do I need to shim on the K44 axles? I know the pinion gear needs to be shimmed. If I pull out on the pinion shaft a little and spin it, it's really smooth but a lot of backlash between the pinion and ring gear.
If I push the pinion shaft in and spin it, the backlash is minimal, but it feels very rough.

What "feel" am I looking for when I turn the pinion shaft, after the pinion is properly shimmed?
Should it feel a little rough to start, and let the gears "break in" after the rig is ran a bit?

I guess, I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for on a properly shimmed pinion gear.
I apologize for my ignorance, but this is my first scaler build. Just want to make sure it's right!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I use the traxxas shims, you'll want to shim it to bring the pinion gear in to get a good mesh just like any other gear to gear set up. You want only a little bit back lash. Not so tight that its binding. Are the axles used ? I would open them up and use a quality grease as well.

The axles are new, just used for mock up..

Which Traxxas shims do I use? RC4WD says the shim size is 6mm X 9.8mm.

I use Traxxas #1985 shims. They are 5x8x.5mm. I will use Team Durango part TD709015 for fine adjustments.

Use toothbrushgel to have a controllook at the wear of the pinion on the ringgear.
Should be in the middle of the ringtooth and pinion.

Thanks for looking Mike! I think I've found the Traxxas shims. The guy at the hobby shop said it was the only shims Traxxas makes. The are 5 x 9 x .5mm. I got a pack, so I should be all set to start working on my axles!
Thanks for your help, Mike!!
