In all fairness we don't know enough about the electronics to know they aren't any good, but I like my Holmes stuff

Radio gear will be the same as every other hpi. Esc is a rebadged hobbywing wp1060. Motor is a sealed can that anyone serious about their crawling will throw away. While the wp1060 is probably the best sub $50 brushed esc you'll find it's no holmes or tekin. There is no programmability.

EDIT: Obviously if I had my choice I'd spec higher, but I'm running some of it just to see how long it goes. The Traxxas 550 21T sealed cans are great crawler motor on 3S and cheap...I've had several expensive brushed motors and these last way longer and work as good or better...much cheaper too. Holmes waterproof BRXL or Tekin FXR will replace rebadged Hobbywing when I get the urge. Last edited by Natedog; 01-30-2016 at 08:43 PM. | ||

According to BigSquid's post today, it was mentioned that supposedly the Venture FJ is "a ways off" time-wise. I wonder how long that means until we actually have a price and it's available :-/

Well that's a bummer. I wonder how long this "a ways off" time is. A week a month a year? |

| Re: New Toyota FJ body scaler Hmm.. The snow gives me ideas.. Needs a 'Big T' Amarok Sochi Polar Expedition body, pro-line roof-rack, Axial lightset, big roll-bar, alot of white and light blue paint, and some fat, wide tires.... *rubs hands* (Yeah. No fan of the Cruiser. Ugly, far too busy design-wise) I hope HPI decides to NOT skip Europe for a big release like this. It took more than a year to get my hands on the mini-trophy. Oh, and hoping for a kit/roller. But, then again, seeing their heavy delegation at Nuremberg, I have good hopes. And HPI néeds a winner over here, with the troubles they are having. even more, I wànt them to have a winner. I always found their attention to detail in their semi-scale stuff great. Close to Tamiya, who was the King, until Axial started splurging-out on massive detailing. And to all people that wanted more this or that. Well. That would make for a $1000.- rig. No problem for those with the funds, and works for some boutique releases, but not for a general brand like HPI, that already had some expensive market-failures in the past (1/5 b5 flux. C1, mini-trophy) I truly believe they ticked the right boxes here. Drop-box, BTA steering, panhards, all-metal drive train. Nice, compact front servo-gearbox-motor unit. And partof the drive-train from the parts-bin, which makes it easy to put-in all expensive space-age metal bling whatevers that those with the funds like, and seem to think is ab-so-lutely neccessary to have even a starting chance at trailing.. Dogbones? 32° degree steering angle? Ouch! That might be OK for the RTR crowd, but it won't suffice for those of us on this site that want max steering. I hope CVDs are included in the kit! Will we get a kit? I'm still shocked RTRs are released before kits. I guess that's what wells though. As for those doubting the RTR electronics, I believe that ESC is a rebranded HobbyWing QuicRun WP 1060. If that's the case it's an awesome, inexpensive brushed ESC. I use these in my crawlers. |

Don't axial scx kits come with dogbones? I can't remember because I've always done the xr10 mod to them. Isn't the ascender the only one that comes with "cvds"? Besides that torque twisting flopper is not my idea of a good scaler. Yes the front wheels turn a lot but what use is that when most of the time they are in the air. Of cource you can do mods to combat this issue. But I would bet you can mod this too. |

| Re: New Toyota FJ body scaler You clearly must not own an Ascender because it is leaps and bounds better in performance than a SCX10. It is probably the out of the box performance benchmark HPI should aim for with this truck.

No I definitely do not own an ascender. A few of my crawler buddies do how ever. After seeing the performance of the ascender I didn't want one. The main down fall of the platform is the ridiculously small reduction in the ring and pinion of the axle. Because of this there is too much torque in the driveshaft which causes torque twist. |

The torque twist is easily reduced, just try yourself or read some of the great Ascender build threads. It's much cheaper and easier to install a light rear swaybar or DinkyRC cantilever rear shock setup, than it is to make more steering out of something with limited steering potential. Quote:

But the small pumpkin makes the axletubes look fat. Besides the fancy battery mount is illegal if you want to compete with the sorrca rules. Anyway. Enough BS about the assbender. When is this HPI vehicle coming and how much is it going to be. That's what I want to know. |

@Scrap, nothings perfect but at least it's an improvement over Axial's giant axle pumpkins. Battery mount is easily lifted up slightly and bolted to the chassis in front instead of the dogbone link to the front axle. I (and most of us here) want better new products, not more of the same old...that is why I compare and ask questions. This forum is for sharing ideas of like-minded people who enjoy this hobby and I appreciate constructive criticism and try to keep polite. I too want to know when this new truck is coming and how much $$$, thanks! |
