| ECX Barrage - motor getting very hot, traxxas 380 upgrade?
Hey Guys, So this is my Daughter's ECX Barrage (purple truck) the only thing i've done to it is replace the servo... because the stocker pretty much instantly stripped lol. New body, lights, and decent wheels/tires. It does pretty well actually but the motor gets CRAZY hot really quickly. Yesterday we were out crawling and it only lasted 5-7 mins before it bogged down and would barely move. the motor was extremely hot and after cooling it ran again, but it feels like the motor may be on it's way out. i have a 380 motor out of a traxxas mini slash as well as a latrax motor. On youtube i saw some people swapped out to these but i couldn't find any info on how they ran (even on the ECX upgrade post on here). Just wanted to see if anyone was running either of these. I was contemplating the 380 motor and doing like an 12t pinion. I just didn't want to waste my time if it's not worth it. Or if there's a better option out there. Thanks! 380 options are limited. The Mini Slash and Latrax are likely low turn motors and they'll overheat, too. Redcat has some 380 motors that are supposedly 40t. The Yeti Jr. has a short 40t 380. Chinese sensorless brushless are the only thing that come to mind with a low kV. I've got a 3250kV long can one in a NQD Tear Into jet boat that does good. But a brushless ESC with a good drag brake would be needed for a crawler. Good luck with the search. |

Those look like a set of Pitbull Rockbeast 1.9 tires on your daughter's barrage - the ones which are 4.45" in diameter, correct? I tried running those same tires on my Barrage a few weeks ago. I loved how it handled, but the motor got too hot for my liking. I'm still running with stock gears, so I don't know how much better it would be if I dropped the pinion to the smallest possible option. Perhaps someone else can comment on that? I have an Axial Yeti Jr. that I never came to love. Again, I haven't tried changing the gearing but even with the tiny tires that it comes with, mine gets really hot. 190 degrees within 15 minutes. If it gets that hot with those lil' wheels I can only imagine that it wouldn't fare well in a Barrage with 1.9. I'm waiting to see if it'll be an option to upgrade the motor plate and motor in the first generation Barrage with those that are now coming on the version 2 Barrage. |

They are. they're not really any taller than the stock tires though. I'm going to maybe gear this down some as well. it's almost a little too zippy.

I used to have a Losi Mini-8ight T which had all kinds of issues with its stock motor. I wound up replacing it with a Traxxas 380 Velineon that really woke it up and stopped the cogging issues. I wonder whether those 380s can be setup in a way that would allow smooth crawling, though? As it is, I turn down the throttle on my Barrage to make it smoother. I almost feel like I've kicked it into 2nd speed when I get to open terrain and turn the throttle back up.

Both the ECX Barrage kit and the Doomsday will be using 390 motors/mounting plates as well as outboarded shocks (a common mod) when they arrive. Seems that ECX were made aware of some shortcomings shortly after releasing the original. Good for them to act upon them! Hopefully available as spares soon... |

what i'm seeing is 390 cans and 380 cans have the same mounting holes. So i should be able to run something like this: TowerHobbies.com | Axial 40T 380 Brushed Electric Motor |

I wouldn't recommend that motor. I had only mentioned it since it was a 380 size. Something like these would work best: https://www.ebay.com/itm/172794735847

My motor starting acting this way and finally gave up the ghost when I threw in my 2S Lipo...oops. I have a Traxxas Latrax motor (along with another stock motor) and two smaller-sized pinions on order. I'm running SSD steel beadlocks with RC4WD Mudthrasher tires which are smaller than stock...but my axles also don't have the gear reduction built in anymore (MST MSA axles)

For now buy a Traxxas 380, modify or make your own motor plate and gear the pinion down a tooth or two. In the long run, pre-order the parts Durok listed and enjoy. https://www.amainhobbies.com/traxxas...ra7075/p140732

So i ordered a 390 plate but ended up not liking any of the 390 motor options. So instead i bought a Gmade transmission and tossed a 540 in there. Night and day better. The drivelines are at the VERY edge of their max angle but they're working well. Kiddo ran a few packs through it a couple nights ago with no issues. |

Love to see some pics of the gmade trans in there. I know the motor getting hot all to well. And one of the main reasons I stepped up to a 35t 540 and doing a front trans mount and transfer case. |
