Default SCX10 ii + TRX-4 =

Something different and way cool.

Well its kinda the same but not really. I posted them here because I don't have anything planned to put them under yet. Some of you might remember that I have "portalized" several different axles over the years using the 3racing portals for the original AX10 (before the SCX10). I put them on a few sets of Losi MRC axles, several sets of RC4WD yota axles and even a CC01. They could hold up to some moderate power and were good enough for brushed on 3s.

Fast forward to now....
When MST came out with the CFX-W and Traxxas announces the TRX-4, I thought "finally someone has a kit with portals". However, there are a few things I don't really care for in each kit so I thought about another conversion of sorts.
After asking friends with these rigs a lot of questions, I decided to start buying some parts. Several hundred dollars later I had all the parts I needed to start. Measuring and eyeballing for several hours allowed me to formulate a game plan which seemed pretty easy as things almost fit or did fit together but were kinda flimsy. After some time on the lathe, I came up with some adapters and done! Now to figure out what to put these under....

You will see these in the 1.9 section some time in the near future.

Very good sir, I say make some! I'm about to order another set of housings and have some material at the shop for an offset front.

Ingenuity!

Wont the high pinion force you to build a tall truck?

Flipping the centre part and making low pinion axles would give more clearance to allow the heavy parts like motor and transmission to be located lower on the chassis.

I already thought about that which is why I chose these housings over modifying the stock housings. Since I don't have a current project to put these under, we will see how it all works out when I start building.

Of course, anything is possible. Pretty much the same basic operation to put portals on any axle. Keep in mind that the inner shafts may need modifying for width. I'm running two long side shafts for ease of assembly and since the shafts have a smaller dia. between the CV end and the locker end, that may be an issue if you just grind and shorten the locker end.

Killer- solving the worls problems one axle at a time! That extra gearing means even less torque twist annnnddd more clearance.

Great ingenuity. Can you say what aspects of the TRX axle you are not fond of?

It's fine the way Traxxas designed it, they obviously spent a lot of time refining it. Cant say I dislike any of it.
I don't have a need for the selectable locker but it's definitely a cool feature
I like to have different things
I can't leave anything alone
(This is a silly reason but...) I can't run Traxxas axles at Axialfest but want portals.

Very nice Dean, these are what inspired me to set off on my endeavor! How do the portals change your final drive ratios compared to the stock ratio?

I totally understand the desire to alter and create into my own. Stock is never an option it seems. Again, great job!

Thanks Ernie, it will be around 48:1 when its all done. There will be a lot of changes in the area of the transmission.

I'd like a set of adapters if you make Some? This was one of my first thoughts when the trx-4 came out. I didn't want to buy a whole truck for just the portals. Lol great work!
