Foremost Delta - Oil Field Truck

Hi there,

my name is Ralf, a 57 year old. In 2015 I was bored about build rigs out of the Box. But, how to build a very own rig? Wood? Not my material. Plastics? I tried it, but it was not very satisfying. Metal? YES!

As a Programmer without any experiences with this material, I work with it , raise my skills and my equipment for sheet-metal like a bender or a rolling-machine etc.
In the beginning I build some small and simple parts for a SCX10 I , some cages to practise hard-soldering and so on.
To work with Metal makes me happy, so it was consequent that I followed my Idea to try a scratch build in Metal. But what kind of Car was perfect for my Skills at that time?
After some hours of searching the WWW i've found it:

The Foremost Delta Oil Field Truck.


Basic Tech Specs:

Width 3,30 m (10,8ft
Height 3,2 m (10,5ft)
Length (naked frame) 9,15 m (30ft)
Tire-Height 1,7m (5,6ft)
Tire-Width 1m (3,3ft)

Why this unusual vehicle?

This ugly truck has a nice rectangular Body, easy? to build with sheet-metal.
The articulated steering promised new skills to me.
The huge dimensions of the original fits my intention to work not with small parts wich I can't handle without tweezers.
While browsing for some tech specs of the Truck I'm hooked on the Idea to build a full functional Gin Pole. And not as show. It should be able to lift easy the usual Scale rigs up to a 8x8-Truck.

Why hellsyeah. I have nearly 18 years in the oil fields and have no idea what that truck is for. LOL. But I never worked on land though. Always on the water. But even still, I can’t fathom what it is for. With a gun pole I can see it being “jack of all trades” type rig.

All starts with the first Version of the Axles.
I planned it in the first thoughts as a 4x4 with 2 old xr10 moa-axles.
Wheels are nearly scale 3.8 tires from a 1:8 truck like traxxas summit.

To compare the size nearby a scx10I with 1.9 Rok-lox mounted.


The axles are to narrow but when the Wheels mounted reverse, they fits perfect.

So the first selfmade things of the truck were wheel-adapters




During this Project, many things are broken or do not working but these Wheels are surprisingly robust.


On the Beginning I worked only with a little Proxxon bfw40 mill motor. The look an feel from the Parts are not fresh out of a fabric.
And so I decided very early, that I don't build it as a factory-new car, but rather in a "used, but tender refurbished"-look.

The Foremosts suspension is very easy. Frontaxle with leafsprings, Backaxle none

So the next steps were the flanges for the leafsprings , the leafsprings and the first part of the frame

Today for the flanges I would use my Mill for the grooves but at that time I only have an Mini Proxxon Buzz Saw to avoid heavy filing.

So I marked and bore the holes on a aluminium bar 25x10 mm (~ 1" x 3/8")

The Leaf-Springs are made of Feeler gauge tape (~1/2" x 20/1000")

In this first stage I build only one spring with the eyes. With an ongoing project and weight there will be successive more springs.

Hi there,

Today, it started with mystic signs

the joint for the articulated steering is ready

This joint looks simple and almost to small but works well at all times.
Only some minor changes on the flanges are happen to raise the possible steering angle.

After this I can mount the Axles and have a first look to the complete frame-length.


Obviously my workingplace was too small and so an old ikea rollable commode taking place in the basement.

Going on with the steering. The next pics shows the first, ofcourse dewy-eyed, version to move the steering. A 38 kg ( 83 lbs) standrad-servo.
In the cellar with clean desk and no weight on it, it works well.
But later you will see several stages of steering-evolution till the end

Hi,

where do I get the Infos and Plans for the Model? Plans none. A small bunch of Facts from the Foremost-Brochures. But the most of Information were from these Pics:

Fortunately they was almost exact from the side and so I'm able to measure the sizes with Photoshop. The base-size was the diameter of the tires. Brochure -> Brand and Type of Tire -> Tire - Homepage -> Size.

The rest is measure, measure,maesure.....

And then started the sheet-metal-origami and the first things on the Way to build a scale Foremost Delta.
sheet-metal is blank steel 0,5mm (~ 0,19")

First of all: The cover to hide the non-scale-parts of the hinge

Blank Steel is too quick rusty to leave him blank. Therefore it will usually painted with primer, base coat and lacquer.
Three steps with many little things? Hhhmmm...
googeling, thinking, googeling , thinking.

Yipieeee. I've found the Solution!




A viscous, gap-filling lacquer inclusive base coat. Applicable with a Brush. (I don't have the possibility to spray)
Usually one layer will be enough.
Only a small deficit: I tooks minimum of 2 days to drying. Really bound not unitl a Week. (A great challenge to me patience )


A first try in "Baumaschinen Gelb" (construction machine yellow).




I love it.

After a week the strength-test. Only with a screwdriver I'm able to build a deep scratch.
Because of his thickness no cracking at little pickels but smooth overlapping. You can see an Example at the bottom of the Picture.
After drying it get a slight glossy visual appearance. With a little washing or real dirt a great behave to simply get the used-look.

The building of the Cabin begins. The Back comes later. With the back, the Seat etc. will be push together like a drawer into the Cabin. Sounds elegant but afterwards considered was this a bit non-optimal.

Many of the parts are build like: Look - Think - Measure - Build. But the Cabin is complex with his sloped areas. so I made a plan

Fantastic looking rig!

Just an observation, but I'd suggest you consider changing your leaf spring mounts/hangers to a double-shear design by passing through both walls of the chassis. Not sure why you chose to install that way (don't have long enough bolts?) but on a heavy rig like this it would be a shame to see it bend those single shear mounts on it's maiden voyage.

The original Truck mounted the spring under the frame. With the shown axle this ist not possible without a unnecessary effort to get a good connection to the axle. So i took it beside the frame.
In the shown stage of the rig your suggestion where right, but later on, there will be no space for traverses.
And this solution is very useful. Meanwhile several things and parts on the Rig are broken or redesigned, the leafsprings are still the same.

Hi,
the second plattform and the frontshield are bended.


On the pics you will often see a bottle alcoholfree beer. The size of such a bottle is well known in germany and serve as a optical scale.

In between I get a visit form a scratch-build fully hand-made mog with portal-axles.
A great peace of craftsmanship. The Body is a standard Tamiya-Mog.



With the raise of weight, the number of leafs raises too.

The thick painting and the uneven sheet-metal creates a nice subtle used look.
That's exactly the look I go for.

I see no issue with mounting outside the frame positioning the leafs where they need to be -- the issue is that your bolt only passes through the outer wall of your chassis, not both walls.
