Default best value crawler/scaler under $200

As the title suggests, I'm looking for recommendations on a cheap rig for my sons 5th bday. have been looking at the HSP RGT rock cruiser, seems like a decently built cheap option, i'd prefer something in 1/10 scale but will consider other scales too as long as parts are available. hit me with your best options. keen as a bean to get the little fella hooked on RC stuff, he's certainly showing a lot of interest in my rigs.

If you can stretch your budget to $240, the SCX10 Deadbolt is $239 on sale right now Axial 1/10 SCX10 Deadbolt 4WD EP 2.4GHz RTR

thats a good price for the deadbolt, but unfortunately due to the poor exchange rate from USD to AUD i'd be $300 into it before postage and thats just not gonna work within the budget constraints.

Redcat Gen7 Sport. We bought my 4 year old one for Christmas and it's been great so far. Keep the nimh battery while he gets used to it, and gear it down a few teeth, and he'll have enough truck to be fun, but not so much power that he's constantly breaking stuff.

the Gen7 looks like a decent bit of gear, I have an RS10 from redcat and i've absolutely beat it like a red headed step son, so far its held up pretty well considering.
Definately will shortlist the Gen7.

If you have access to a 3d printer, this should push you over the edge to buy a Gen7: https://www.thingiverse.com/tag:Everest_Gen7

You'll be happier with a gen 7 than a rgt rock cruiser. And I own a rgt. Not sure the parts availability in Australia is for the rgt. In the USA it sucks besides stock ecx barrage parts (same rig different branding) and a small hand full of parts. Unless you want to constantly see if other rigs parts might work. I bought mine for myself to tinker around with and will admit gone a little overboard from tinker to full on custom build.

The Gen7 sport is a great option and it fits your budget perfectly.

have looked at the gen7 and i like what i see but again the exchange rate is going to fxck me, amazon can ship one to me for around $270 so its still a contender tho, just means i'll have to sell my ass or do some cash work to make up the difference. single dad life yo.

If you can get the parts the rgt is a good starter rig. Just change the steering servo and your son should be set. The v3 has fixed all the down sides of the v1

An idea: maybe visit here and ask the locals what they recommend that's cheap:

So after a bit of chin scratching I ended up settling on the HSP RGT for a few reasons. the price, postage time, and the fact that it just looks really fxckin cool.
I'm not too fussed about the prospect of it breaking because I enjoy modding them as much if not more than driving them so whatever the lad breaks I will only rebuild better and more badass!
Can't wait to start bashing with the little bloke, my rs10 parts should be here around the same time his rig arrives too.

I bought a hsp rgt rock hammer on eBay.
Other than Servo and plastic diffs thing is awsome and upgrades readily available.
Been driving in 3 wheel drive for while and still climbs like a champ!!!!
Also lots of axial parts should fit as well.

Here’s the Rock Hammerhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZR2dGa3ROE

Same motor and esc, it’s the wp1040 crawler, slightly upgraded battery but jut higher mah just nimh. Body on it or cage was same as an exceed Legion 10 I had so made up some aluminum panels, partially because the “bronco” style plastic on inner roll cage rubbed a lot!! Threw it on Legion 10.

Honestly for the going rate for this rig it’s a bargain.
Tons of torque hence stripped diffs! It’s a nice crawler that can trail.
Lots of aftermarket compatable parts and just an awsome chassis!

Bomber, gonna be what I buy next winter, been on a buy a truck every fall schedule, been droolin over the bomber since first payed eyes on one, but for the money the Rock Hammer Rocks!!

Tough looking rig you have built. are you still on the stock motor/esc and battery? whats the torque like. I have zero experience with any crawler apart from my rs10 and pretty keen to see what a scaler drives like compared to moa, one thing i wont miss is goddamn clod stall.

I almost bought a Rock Hammer instead of my Gen7. I still might. It's an awesome looking rig, and would be fun to have on the trails alongside my Bomber.
