Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

I've taken my knowledge of the barrage and its siblings. And from others that have posted in the at the moment 25 page tread on the barrage. And cut the fat and left the meat for you.
Will update with links and more info when I get it.

Hope this helps others and If you see anything not listed and whatnot post and ill add it.

DIFFERENCES
ok, so most know the ecx barrage, rgt rock cruiser, ftx outback are based off the same rig but what makes them different.
Well to start they all have the same
chassis rails, axles, trans, skid, shock mounts, bumper mounts, bumpers ok you get the point.
Now what makes them different
ELECTRONICS the biggest difference out them all. The rgt and ftx in version 1 or v1 have 2 in1 esc/rx. The ecx got a little better set up in that it got an esc and rx in separate units.
STOCK BODIES the other big difference the rgt came in 4 different bodies with 2 colors each.
Ftx came in 3 of the 4 bodies that the rgt came in.
Barrage came in one in the one and only barrage body.
VERSIONS
Most are familiar with the OG v1 then out came the barrage doomsday (v2) which fixed a lot of the things that were some issues or overlooked items such as: The doomsday axle housings have a built in upper 4 link mount. the doomsday did get rid of the long stub shaft and wide hex. Also the rock finders on the bottom of the axle. And went to a different link mount that has both lower and shock in one instead of two different like the og v1 barrage. Besides of the improvements the doomsday is just ugly with all the tid bits thrown on it. The body it self imho isn't bad looking with all the tid bits off of it. Kinda rat rodish. With all that said lets move on.

BODIES
251.4mm = 9.9 inch wheelbase and 195.5mm = 7.7 inch width makes it near identical in dimensions to the CC-01.

Tamiya bodies

Subaru Brat - wb246mm, W 180mm
Sand Scorcher - wb 250mm
Tamiya Jeep or Pajero: wb246 mm, SW 195 mm

Tamiya F350 cab fits on it too, But with the bed, the wheelbase would have to be extended by 35mm. Or truggy it.

Nikko Jeep Wrangler TJ
Nikko ABS bodies as Toyota FJ or Nissan Titan with wb265 mm and W 190 mm
New Bright Hummer H3 with wb 250 mm and W 180 mm

RC4wd Hilux body: order the bed for the 4 door version which is about an inch shorter. combining with the shorter bed with the 2 door cab will align to stock barrage wheelbase. then it's just a matter of bobbing some off the back end to reduce the overhang and departure angle.
Stock 2 door Hilux body with bed will not fit without modifications. it's about 1" too long for wheelbase.

SUSPENSION
FREE MOD:
rear: remove the rear drive shaft, separate the two halves, cut about ⅜”-½ “ off the male portion, file off any burrs and reinstall. Uncut shaft bottoms out before the suspension does.

Front: remove front cross brace under battery tray or electronic tray (depending on ecx/rgt/fix) , flip it upside down and reinstall to allows more travel between steering servo and cross brace.

Billet Works Designs for their front and rear Losi MRC 3MM HD link/shock mounts. Yes, it fits. Tho are not being made at the moment.
Losi Mini Rock Crawler - Mini Wedge - Billet Works Designs

Dravtech on his shapeway store has his wraptor adaptors which are like the bwd setup but with the added benefit of xr mod since these are the main purpose.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/NT...=related-items

Upper link mounts- Continuing on with ditching the tiny M2 hardware for standard M3 stuff, BWD front servo plate/4 link mount and rear Delrin 4 link plate. Again, it bolts on.
And any other 4 link plate for a MRC. Might not be very scale but performance will be better.
Doomsday axle are setup with 4 link mount and can get upper link from them as well.
Fixing the TT (torque twist), 4 linking it will help just like how it helped rtr losi mrc. Outboarding the shock will help as well.

OUTBOARDING SHOCKS
With the BWD mounts or dravtech adaptors you can outboard the shocks.
Or get the doomsday axles since it was fixed in this version over the OG barrage
Or go about fitting scx10 or similar axles.

Another way to outboard is to move the lower shock mount to the out side of the lower link mount on the axle and use longer hardware. It may interfere with flex or tire depending on size of tire (1.5,1.7,1.9)

SHOCKS
FREE MOD:cut the limiters off all 4 shocks or cut them in ½ all up to you and your preference.
FREE MOD:Shocks all the way up. Will lower the center of gravity making it stable.

Losi mrc/ vaterra blue Springs fit the stock shocks and are softer then stock springs.
Losi mini t rear springs as well.
How you make vaterra slick rock blue spring work with stock shocks. Take stock spring off flip top spring holder install blue spring. They are a little shorter hence flipping the stock spring holder. If you wanted to a little fuel tube inside the shock on the shaft under the piston will help take up the slack.

aluminum losi mrc/vaterra slickrock shocks fit the stock axles since the 2mm hardware. they were a bit shorter and believe they are 75-76mm they are adjustable and come with different valve piston for tuning. These come with mentioned blue springs. Also losi mini t front and rear springs fit these shocks as well. These are sorta bolt on to fit stock ball stands are the wrong size and must buy the upper shock mounts for a slickrock/mrc then they will bolt on or (4) 3x10mm Ball Studs

METAL LOCKER
Hsp part number 680010 also a redcat part #
It works in ecx temper axles which are the same as barrage axles. The temper just don't have cvd axle shafts and widerens. The locker is meant for the redcat everest16 which is the same as a ecx temper.
680010 | Redcat Racing

STEERING
Ecx has aluminum knuckles for the barrage as well as. Ecx temper18/redcat Everest16 aluminum knuckles fit too. its all about your color options with these as they are a copy of stock plastic knuckles.

Want some more steering losi knuckles the c-hubs might need a bearing for them not sure if stock will fit these knuckles

Wow! Mods! Sticky please!

Re: Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

Had to much info in first post so moved some to post also added how to put a 540 motor in with a 3d printed skid also going to a 390 using v2-v3 stock parts.

Continuing

MISCELLANEOUS

Ftx hop ups main use for part numbers since the parts come from the UK.
FTX Outback Options

Chassis width is about 7.2cm =2.835” both at the front and at the back and also at the Skitplate.
The skidplate is about 3.5cm= 1.378” long.

Redcat servo mount that drilled 2 new holes in (one already lined up) and mounted on the axle in place of the plastic one that came on the barrage. redcat part number is 18010. The hole on the back edge is in the right spot.... just need to drill and countersink two holes on the front edge to mount on the axle. For a full size servo.
https://redcatracing.toys/product/re...-wservo-mount/

Or you can use the doomsday V2 servo mount which should bolt right on with no mods. Part # is ECX221000

Battery mount behind front shocks sideways
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2733661

50/50 weight bias without battery installed. Which was located in the rear. Moving the battery and electronics around to get somewhere around 60/40 bias
getting weight as low as possible such as aluminum wheels over plastics wheels will help as well.

12t to 14t will probably be a good start. 10t is to small and motor doesn't have the room to get any gear mesh.
It's been known the barrage is geared wrong out of the box. The 60t/16t combo will burn up the motor. Cause of the trans being bulky in all the wrong places the motor can't shift to get the sought after ratio of 6 like a 60t/10t combo would give.
22T is stock pinion for doomsday
16T is stock for v1 ecx/ftx/rgt
14T is stock for temper 18/ everest 16

GOING TO 390 MOTOR
You will need motor plate from V2 Outback or ecx doomsday as well as the screws that hold the motor on to plate, or order some 2.5 x 6mm cap head screws as motor does not come supplied with screws. The screws that hold the motor on the V1 370 are a different diameter and will not work with 390 motor.

I would recommend everyone to take or cut the sticker off of the motor. it covers one cooling slot completely and the second about 1/3. That should also help keep it run cool.

front upper link "wishbone" ball socket
threaded end can pull out from the plastic on the link side,
re-installed with some blue thread-locite.
Or 4 link.

SCX10 and OTHER 1/10 PARTS

Everest 10 trans conversation skid
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2711852
Redcat makes full metal gears for this trans
Everest Steel Transmission Gears | Redcat Racing

Rear scx10 shock hoops front and rear
They are close. use one of the existing holes to mount and mock up. You'll have to drill for the other. They are so close in fact that drilling for the second mounting hole, it's going to get in to the other existing hole a fraction. Should not be a problem though because it will encroach on it so little and it will be bolted at the back, plus use washers.

Scx10 skid/540 conversion

For the skid, the plastic keeper pins molded in to the skid on both sides fit in to existing frame holes. Also the front two skid mount bolts fit in to existing holes. Will have to drill for the back bolts. (although, between the plastic pins fitting, the two front bolts that secure the skid and all four lower links tied in to it through the frame, it's not going anywhere. You will have to drill all 4 holes for the upper links.

Re: Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

How is the v3 "Bowler" different from these?

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/1-9-s...p-barrage.html

Are the axle internals the same? Tranny? Will the older c-hubs and knuckles fit?

Thanks in advance! :)

hillbillyrc 02-22-2018 08:15 AM

Re: Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

The chassis is longer the part is xl version. Lol

The spool is the same. The housing is v3. The c-hub I believe is different if you look its a clamp style a where the c-hub sits its bigger. The knuckle could be bigger or the same. The uni shaft I bet would work in the doomsday axle since it a step down from the v3.

Ecx hasn't came out with a rig yet that has these axles. Same with ftx. Just RGT that doesn't mean they won't just haven't yet.

It seems just from a look it a mix of v1-3 it shares a lot of the same parts as v1 and couple from v2 and v3 axles and chassis.

I didn't add it in since I don't know to much about it maybe honchojoe can help out more.

thanks for asking, stompercrawler. i have been eyeballing that version for a while now too. especially if i can get those leaf springs to work on it! might be a good base to build my wife's rig... ;)

Rgt has a leaf spring version that looks like a sawback.

That is a thing of beauty! I'm guessing internally-sprung shocks.
Anybody know how difficult it is to have add a panhard to either v1-3 front axle? @honchojoe

hillbillyrc 02-22-2018 10:01 PM

Re: Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

V3 would be the easiest I believe since the c-hubs have double shear mounts on both sides.

honchojoe 02-22-2018 11:12 PM

Re: Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

Hi guys. Panhard mounts already exist on the axle and the servo mount but are not used in rtr form. The V3 has the same trans, shocks, shock towers and braces. The chassis is slightly longer.

The V3 axles share the same locker and gears but that's it. The c hubs and lockouts are splined. The front has universal shafts instead of dog bones. My post linked above has all the lengths and widths etc.

The parts sheet lists optional leaf springs but as yet I haven't found them forsale anywhere. I'll be sure to post details once I find them.

On another note the alloy lockers are very hard to find and expensive so I've been talkibg to a guy to see if they can be made cheap enough.

There is a new barrage gen2 1.55 that has all the fixes of the doomsday without the mad max body or the odd off tan body of the og barrage. Rtr comes in blue and yellow with licensed Falken Wildpeak M/T tires in 1.55 flavor.
Thought this was a note worthy update to the bible.

Wow! What a great resource for us Barrage guys. Thanks hillbilly!

Did you forget to include the kit version Barrage in the versions?

Its just a doomsday with out the body and tires. Nothing to note worthy besides the clear body.

Re: Hillbilly's barrage upgrade bible!

What are you guys doing about axle driveshafts? I've snapped both front and rear, the metal seems very weak. Does anyone make decent steel axle shafts that fit? If not, what are some complete axles that fit please?

Thanks,
MP
