So just curious. What's the technical background with this brain vs cool-running stuff? I don't recall previous esc discussions involving an esc brain.

Looks like a good part. I'll post up in the morning on the ones I used with the same basic specs. It was outputting 6.4 onto the rx wires and net heat was lower with the Zener installed. The bec can't be programmed with the Zener in the way. The cool running mod is because some people want the highest performance possible, and it is an easy hack to do. |

Just a question John, Do I need an external BEC as in this thread? Or are the onboard BECs a good enough replacement. Cheers eh, Todd |

Yes you do need one. We have had positive results with the zener diode 568-5916-1-nd from Digikey. Just a run of the mill 500mw 6.2v zener. While the output is a bit higher than I would like, it still reduces the heat considerably in the system. This zener can be used with the ESCs in stock form, and if the internal BEC chip has been removed. |

Isn't the internal BEC redundant then?

Remind me again which chip to remove and where to install the ZD. Do I source the ZD if so where? Cheers, J |

| Re: TorqueMaster BR Mini Packs the Power! Yes, but the brain needs to be powered somehow. Most people would be really confused if their ESC didn't boot up without an external 6v source. Quote:
Don't worry about removing the chip, it doesn't seem to matter with something else powering the rail between 6.1 and 6.4v. I have a diagram of the position of zener a few posts back. You can either pick up the zener I listed from Digikey, or I can send some your way. | |

super tiny, about the size of a 1/2 watt resistor.

Do we still leave Holmes Hold deactivated until firmware update? Can you post a pic of a ZD inline RTR? Thanks John. Last edited by tapped-out; 09-26-2013 at 12:01 PM. |

You can't just throw that diode in there. It has to be back-biased, right? But of course everyone knows how to do that. |

No biggie. The diode will probably have a colored band at one end and John will tell us which way that band goes.

The black band would be further from the bec when put on the positive wire, as shown in the wiring diagram as well.
