Well I finally got the electrics done. Decided to use the Mamba Max Pro that's been laying around for a while. Soldered on an output cable to run a BEC and set the mmp bec to 5 volts to feed the rx. Spliced a ground wire from servo to rx as well to reduce the chance of glitching. All i have to do is set the esc's reverse to crawler as it's set normal pause then reverse. Overlooked that earlier.

First drive it was too much punch so have played with the throttle curve to smooth it out. The Holmes 30t motor is pretty pokey on 3s and needs some calming down lol.

Also I had problems with the tie rod for the steering hitting the panhard bar mount, so spaced the mount with a couple of 2mm spacers and adjusted the rod slightly longer. Can't wait to get out and give it a run.

Removed spacers from panhard mount as not really needed now i have shortened the horn to 20mm.

Today's mission was to get it in a fit state to drive then take over to a local spot and give it a run.

I had cut off the back of the wheel well kit as it didn't work with my shock mounts. I made a partition (is that the right word?) from foam board and glued it on with hot melt glue. Couple of cut outs for the frame rails and done.

Also made up a bumper mount using 2 pices of delrin rod sliding into the mounts and the ends drilled for 3mm screws. It's a Hot Racing aluminium winch bumper, but tucks nicely under the grill and will save the front from too much damage.

The 10 minute test drive went well. Some noticeable torque twist. I have 35 weight oil in the shocks and it seems a bit light. Maybe try 45 as I have some. I was impressed what it would drive up, though a 'proper' drive will soon show whats good or bad. All i have to do now is finish off the body.

Been a while since I posted as been busy with real life stuff. I messed up the body leaving it by a window in the sun and it distorted slighlty. I have managed to get it almost good but decided to paint it to see how it looks. I found a spray can of red/brown spray primer and as it looked a bit like rust, have given it a coat.Once this has dried out I will mask of fthe bed and paint that black and the rest of the body an as yet undecided colour. The roof is not fixed on yet as needs a bit of trimming to fit better.

More done and pretty much finished now. I always seem to mess up body work for some reason. I'm not impatient and don't rush, but always something happens. The final paint is actually a car aerosol, VW Brilliant orange I had laying around and is pretty old, so time to use it. It looks a bit dark due to the red/brown primer. A coat of white primer might have been a good idea I guess. The grille, rear bumper, mirriors, and door handles are Tamiya matt black.

I have been ill recently, but managed a short drive in one of my favourite spots. It was a dull day so didn't bother with photos. Hopefully sometime the weather will behave itself.

i have been working on the steering to increase the angle as the Venture seems a bit of a barge sometimes. Hopefully I can get out soon.

Thanks. It's not the first time I have built a kit (1st one was an Ascender 5 years ago). But this time I had to find a body myself. I think a Texan body would make a difference, but will stick it out for now.

I think part of the steering issue stems from the chub not having any caster built in, its just straight up and down. I opted to rotate the front axle back by shortening the upper links, this corrected the pinion angle at the same time (setting it parallel with the ground) and it provides a little bit of castor. I though I had mentioned that in my build thread but I cant seem to find it there.

Humboldt, thanks, I had not thought of that. I spaced the panhard mount out with 2mm spacers and wound out the arm to allow for that. Also the steering link hit the axle panhard mount screw head which limited steering angle. I have moved the panhard rod to the back of the mount, but left the chassis end in stock position for now. Also as the tires were rubbing on the lower links I put 5mm spacers on the inside of the axle mount. This might cause stability problems, but a drive will tell.

I will get some pics soon. Just driving on the flat shows a good improvement. I am wondering if this could cause problems with the cvd's though. I hope not, but maybe the pin will just break and nothing worse.

I am wondering what the spares situation is now. I haven't heard anything since the announcement about the new owners.

Thanks Nate. Been a busy few days as clearing loads of junk out of house as new furniture coming soon. Will try some photos soon , but weather is not too good until next week. Got to get out and drive, 2 months of illness has got me stir crazy. The short drive I got last week impressed me. It's just fine tuning now. Shocks seem underdamped, but that could be because of the heavy body. I have a lexan body to fit, but that is worth a thread in the paint and body section as I had to cut almost 1 1/2" of the rear of a pickup shell.

So I got around to taking some photos of the steering set up. I also shortened the upper link by 4mm using some Vaterra links parts with a couple of spacers. This seems to give some camber now which can only be good.

Sorry for the quality of the photos, but it is a dull wet day here.

Upper link, courtesy of Vaterra lol

Front view of the panhard chassis mount with spacers and an Xray turnbuckle as the stock one was a bit short.

View of the spacers on the lower link mounts. I don't know if this will affect the handling, but the Rock Beasts were rubbing on the links.

Well there looks to be some camber now.

Steering left.

Steering right.

i just hope the cvd's can handle this amount of steering.

Great looks like just about proper front axle caster now and no more tire rub! If the HPI CVDs can't handle the angles, Vaterra Ascender CVDs are a fairly easy retrofit and I've only broken one so far....ever. Oh yes body pics looks good, just wonder how it warped in the window of sunny UK, least you got it straightened out.
