This is probably more of a general RC question, but since it's happening to my Venture I'll post it here.

My steering trim goes out of alignment every few seconds. It'll be too far driver's side, so I dial it in and drive straight for a few seconds, then it's too far passenger side.

It seems to do it most after some steering input, or some suspension input. It doesn't appear the servo is failing to re-center as when I let the wheel go, the front wheels snap back to place, it's just usually the wrong place.

I don't see anything rubbing. My panhard bar is still installed, so suspension movement shouldn't be doing it. I replaced the stock servo with a Savox 1230 some time ago, and I'm still running the stock RX/TX.

I'm out of ideas. Any guesses? Thanks guys.

Servo horn metal or plastic? What battery are you using? All stock electronics other than the servo? Could be a voltage issue, could be a broken gear in the servo, could be the servo horn skipping teeth in the servo.

Stock horn with stock servo saver.

Battery is Dyn-O-Mite 3S, 5000mah (heavy as hell, but puts some weight out back).

Stock ESC, Traxxas 21t 550 motor. 2 LED lightbars installed powered by their own power supply.

You know, maybe I need a BEC...

Could be the servo saver. I still have mine in the box, never even installed it. I haven't used a servo saver on any crawler. It seems most people don't like them, but can't think of a good reason at the moment. (someone else could I guess).


Also check for any play on chassis to axle and steering links, hubs and knuckles.

I broke a plastic panhard mount the other day (on a different rig) and it was steering very erratically, though I doubt yours is broken since they're metal on the Venture. I'd check all of the steering linkage to ensure its all fastened tight. You might also look over you knuckles and C-hubs for any damage or loose screws.

Agree with M1tch, most likely the servo saver causing the issues. Your electronics seem to be a non issue since you have the lights on their own power source. Cheapest fix is a new servo horn first, test it out, then go BEC next but I doubt you will need to.

10-4. Maybe I'll start my troubleshooting at the servo. It works, but I came out of my 1/8 scale buggy, so it could have some teeth chipped off the gears.

Next try will probably be deleting the servo saver and using a new, metal horn.

Flip the rig over, hold the truck and wheel as best you can and use the transmitter to slowly turn the servo left and right. You should be able to feel and hear any broken teeth. Same with the servo save, you would be able to tell if it’s not fully returning to center.

I'd almost guarantee that the problem is the servo saver.

Try tightening the spring on it if you can but the better solution is to get rid of it - IMO, servo savers should NEVER be used in crawler or trail rig. There's no reason to have a spring in the steering system on a rig that demands precise steering inputs.

Super simple. Just take off the servo and servo saver and replace with a metal servo horn. My only bit of advice is to buy some 2mm spacers just in case you can’t find a thin enough servo horn. I had to file mine down a bit and shim the servo so it would clear the frame rail.

I deleted my servo saver by copying jason02ws6's idea above, and problem solved.

Photos to come as I update my build thread.

Good to hear it worked out. I used 5mm spacers on my servo and the arm clears the chassis easily.
