Late start to the hobby, here is my HPI Venture FJ Cruiser

Just a brief thing about myself is I love me a Toyota. Some dumbass researched all of the Toyota 1/10 lexan bodies available, and told himself he'd build them all with all different setups and colors. Well that dumbass is me. I currently have 5 completed, 6 & 7 are in progress with 3 other bodies left onhand...

In 2019, I purchased a sand HPI Venture and didn't ever think it'd takeover as an actual hobby. Upon starting to mod this just about a year ago after letting the rig sit, here is how it looks today in silver. It's got some hiking miles into it, hasn't seen water either but when I had an aftermarket driveshaft lose a set screw out in the field I then began the grease/thread lock application maintenance. I haven't gone on a hike with it yet in it's current state (was nearly stock on initial hike). I will bump the post when I add a running video .

Key notes on some of the parts I've added/modified besides the obvious.
- Mamba X on 3S, HH PP 2700kv 12T pinion, Reefs 777
- Ebay Wrangler window visors trimmed to fit (unfortunately had to make it 2pc).
- Exclusive RC hood cowl for VS410 to hide body magnet mounts. Rear mounts are concealed by the hi lift jack with mount brackets made for the one of the SCX10 Jeep kits.
- Amazon universal red caliper brake kit mounted up front with some 1/16" ABS & 440 90 degree L brackets onto the aluminum knuckles.
- Added a plastic hinge to the 3D printed tire cover to house the Proline tow strap.
- Since the rear bumper is swapped out, the spare cover is mounted on the body using a universal Ebay kit. It's mounted as flush to the body as possible to prevent hang ups on climbs more than stock, all while still trying to keep that spare tire look. Melted some of the areas where it made contact with the bar bumper and also the added ladder purchased from overseas.

That there is a great looking FJ! Great job on all the scale details!

I too love my Toyota's! Can't wait to see your others.

Looking forward to seeing some running footage when you get it posted.:)

Hey BMOW, I might just finally upload some footage haha...

Took this and my GK KR out to the testing grounds beside my house. Just need to edit and upload. I have a thread on the KR if anyone was interested.

Nothing new on this FJ other than I'm looking to swap out the Mamba X and Puller Pro. This combo is perfect for mad trails but I just haven't gone on any recently and trying to focus more on crawling footage. Absolutely nobody likes the Castle sound so this ESC will go into my Slash Trailprerunner build that I've yet to post. Venture will get some sort of 2 in 1 combo like the HW Fusion. I can also complete my interior.

Looking forward to it!"thumbsup"

I agree on the Castle sound. It never used to bother me until I started running more and more HW stuff. I have a boat load of 1080's and one Fushion 2-in-1. I'll be getting more of the Fushions in the future.

Video! It'll probably be the last footage with the Castle & HH combo.

Ah nice, yours is looking great! My Venture FJ is pretty stock looking right now, but I do want to start scaling it out like a heavily modified one eventually.

Trucks look great Goro! Don’t see many FJ’s on the board and that one is killer. Nice job on the setup, it’s well stocked

Thanks guys. I do have an interior that I had gotten printed as I think that's all that's left to add to this thing. But I'll get that done and update the thread once I get the Fusion setup.

Cheers!

Tested out the new Hobbywing Fusion 2300kv yesterday. What a world of a difference when this is completely quiet and can actually creep super slow. I also swapped out the pinion from the 12T back to the stock 16T, only because I couldn't get the 12T to quiet down (harder material I think, Protek one). The 16T seems completely fine and drivetrain noise is nearly absent compared to before. I'll have a video for it soon and update. (need to clean up wiring also)

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d105c7a981.jpg

Since I was doing all that, I decided to also modify the interior I had laying around and install it. With the previous ESC and motor setup, this interior was a pain and I never ran it especially where the battery gets relocated. But now it needs full completion with finishing the floor all the way back (most likely styrene), there's a slight gap between the dashboard and windshield so I'll make a little black strip there as well, and also need to make a cover to conceal the battery under the dash. And needs a driver! The racing seat might need modification if I'm gonna fit something like a wrestler.

New Hobbywing Fusion Pro 2300kv running footage. I initially started with a 1900kv Slate motor, and going from that to the 2800kv Puller Pro was awesome. But the crawling gap from the Puller Pro to this is just amazing.

Great vid showing off the smoothness of the Fushion. I have the 1900kv version of this, but really wanted a little more kv. Looks like this new 2300kv may be what I'm looking for.

That's a good looking interior. Is the dash and center console your design, or is this available somewhere to purchase and download?

I forgot where I got the STL files but I only had 2/3's of the pieces printed. I have the files somewhere laying around. The dashboard actually I received pretty warped on the corners, but I did my best to shape it with some filler and paint. I actually have another dash in ABS which is far more detailed, but it is also solid and not hollow like this one (ton heavier). I plan to hollow it out in the future to make it a lot lighter but also house my light controller like this dash currently does.

Thanks!

Front bumper is RC4WD made for the Venture, but I chopped the ends off to make it more narrow and give the tires clearance.

Rear bumper is also RC4WD. It's the Tough Armor tube bumper made for the Trail Finder 2. They also make a bumper mount conversion for front or rear so I used that to mount the rear bumper. It's mounted on top of the mount though instead of inside it, which brings it up to the lower body line and I cut a few notches in the body for the bumper posts. That bumper is naturally straight since it's for the TF2, but I bent it accordingly on both sides. I think you can see it in one of the pictures, or if you need more let me know.

Sliders are also RC4WD made for the Venture, and bent upwards.

that thang is brawwny! very cool.

Do you have to pull the interior out to get at the battery or does it slide in from the front?

I have to unbolt the dash (4 screws), but also the battery is adhesive taped. Kind of a pain but I wanted to make a big battery work and be somewhat functional still lol.

Thank you for the response👍. I picked up the front bumper, it's in the way. The rear one might be a problem for me, that conversion bracket doesn't seem to be available anymore, same with the side sliders.

I'm finding that because I got into this so late, aftermarket support is drying up because it's discontinued.

I did pick up that spare tire cover, do you have a pic of how you mounted it to the body?

That sucks on the rear mount. Maybe there's an overseas version? Or if it were me I'd probably fit another conversion mount made for a different chassis and try to fit it to the HPI rails. That's if you're certain you want to run the TF2 bumpers.

Took some pics for you. The spare tire mount is a universal one from overseas. The spare would keep getting loose and fall off under crashes so I made a few holes in the male piece to accept a body clip. I wanted the spare cover to hug the back door as close as possible and wanted to add the ladder so I melted the shape of it into the back of the spare cover.

Furthermore, I want to make some kind of brace that connects the spare mount and the rear-most roof rack clips just for some added reinforcement to support the spare cover on the lexan. I had made a few from the spare plastic links but they broke lol.

Nice pics of your rear end!

Just kidding! Thanks for sharing the pics of the rear tire mount. I've been thinking about adding a spare tire to my new FJ build, but I don't have the rear bumper with tire carrier. The way you did yours just might work out for mine. Great job on getting it mounted! Looks great!

The more I study these pics, I think I'm noticing some finer scale details, like a rear windshield wiper and also a rear door hinge? Did you 3D print those? I have a fuel door as well as door handles that I have added. Also, regarding the rear spare tire mount, do you have a link or perhaps a part number? I'm OK with purchasing a part here & there from overseas. Thx again.

I didn't print the wiper or hinge. The wiper is actually a universal one although was listed as the rear wiper via Exclusive RC. The real wiper has a tiny blade so keep that in mind, I just left it alone. And the hinge actually had a huge antenna on it but I cut it off because I only wanted the hinge lol.

Link to exact spare mount:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...740d0a7a93.jpg

If you compare these 2 stock photos from the listing with mine, you can see I reversed the mounting position and cut off the support ribs so the mount is flush against the body.

9T RPP pinion installed. Seems to be promising with this 2300kv Fusion Pro moving a 10lb rig.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b3275488e5.jpg

Yet to test but plan to before Sunday 2/12 for a meet. This picture shows the motor can bottoming out on this motor mount-gearbox screw and still has some room on the left hand side (for those unaware, the motor rotates down to the passenger side for pinion mesh adjustment).

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a201f11455.jpg

The servo mount in stock form (this one is the GPM aluminum one) not only braces the shock towers, but also mounts to the motor mount. To gain more clearance for smaller pinions (had loose mesh 12T), I deleted the area of the servo mount where the motor sits above (shaded grey area) which left me with a 2pc servo mount, sorta. The servo mount itself is still supported by 2 sides (passenger shock tower and motor mount), and the other piece still connected the driver shock tower to the motor mount. Well, that piece just became redundant as I've now mounted the driver shock tower with nylocks, and there's just no more screw there for the motor mount-gearbox lol. My rigs do not see any form of abuse so I think it should be just fine. You can see in the sample photo of what I had as the "2pc" servo mount, and then what I now removed to run the smaller pinion.

Re: Late start to the hobby, here is my HPI Venture FJ Cruiser

Modification for the smaller pinion seems to be holding up ok as it's seen a few hikes since then. Other than needing some maintenance and cleaning done, I'd like to get the rig a little lighter. Doing little things such as cutting excess body posts off, swapping the printed inner fenders to styrene, same for panels in interior etc.

A necessary upgrade this needed was a stronger winch. It didn't make sense to have a scale winch when it's hidden, so I went with the Reefs 422HD V2 (I have the 777 for steering so why not keep it Reefs). But also it frees up a bit of room under the hood. It's not a bolt in procedure for the RC4WD bumper, so here's what I did to make it fit.

Out with the old, in with the new.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...68df584176.jpg

Here's a few other angles, showing how the servo is secured to not only the original servo mount, but also into the aluminum bumper mount that also shows that it's now 2 pieces to make room for the spool and line.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b5ce72c0ef.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fc8d5206ab.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6c5212d675.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ca4ff217a4.jpg

Notice the 3 flush mount screws and one socket head screw to mount the servo. The socket head screw is only used because I drilled the hole into the bumper mount too big so had to use a nylock instead which works out fine.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1d41f1904b.jpg

Still need to clean up the wiring.

Thanks! I've yet to take a picture of the current collection in one whole shot but in due time. And the blue Land Cruiser, it honestly drives so good and messing with the 2spd and locking diffs is a blast. I recently removed the Traxxas receiver and transmitter and set up the Radiolink RC8X on it. Now the diffs are individually controlled which is even more fun.

Re: Late start to the hobby, here is my HPI Venture FJ Cruiser

Ran this rig at Scale Challenge West #5 at Donner Ski Ranch this weekend. I attended A Crawl for Hope here a few weeks ago as well, and I started to run the Venture on the trail when I suddenly lost 3/6 screws in the driver rear wheel hub and I didn't have the specific bit in my bag to tighten them all up. I finished the trail with another rig.

So fast forward a few weeks from that, the Venture is still mudded up and I left it that way for scale lol. But I rebuilt the shocks with 3k CST all around and the damping is absolutely perfect (all the shocks had about 1/3 oil in em haha). These Gmade shocks need a super thick oil, and with the 2 hole pistons I'd say these compare to a stock Element shock that has 45w.

As for any other changes to the rig, minimal.
- Added a Twisted Tree RC antenna for super scale whips.
- Put the sleeping bags in the net back on the roof rack along with a scale tote housing motor oil/first aid kit/GI Joe backpack.
- Added sand ladders, drilling mounting holes in the Thule bar to fix them into place.
- Glued a Matchbox silver FJ Cruiser to the passenger seat.
- 1/12 figure with a pumpkin as the head!

2 Metrics and a Jimny. There's a Scout blocking our path, as the fella was taking a smoke break lol. We were one of the last groups in the trail so there was no rush and just enjoy the time out there and all the chit chat. Also you can see I have the winch lead out. I was one of 3 trucks that hooked onto this custom 8x8 rig. 2 were up front pulling it and I was on the side up on a ledge to help turn him around a corner. It was pretty sweet yet nobody has any footage of it. The Reefs 422 performed without a hiccup.
