Default Just got my Wheely King

Lets see, my WK just arrived at my Dad's house but I am 1,000 miles away :-(
So, I will have to wait until this weekend to pick it up.
Anyway, is there anything I should check or adjust when I get it out if the box ?
How about anything I should order right off the bat ? I am planning on getting the HPI crawler kit whenever Tower gets it in stock.
Just wondering anything I should order that won't come in the kit ? I can place orders 1,000 miles away !

Thanks,
Raz

right out out of the box you can have mad monster truck fun the thing is so close to what you c on monster jam, its quite exciting but thats just to hold you over till you get your hands on the crawler conversion. A better batterie which you will need a new charger for and a good moter i run novak 55 will get you crawling. if money is not tight there is lots you can do to "pimp your ride" explore this forum the money and fabrication skills some people have will amaze you there is alot of very nice stuff you can spend all your cash on then get it dirty and break...

x2 on the wk being a fun out-the-box monster truck But if you are planing on making it a crawler, you can have even more fun with it The 1st thing i did when i got myn, was to stretch it, make new links and gearing and flip the chasis. HPI has a "how to" sticky on here. You can either build the "kit" your self from parts, or you can buy their kit. If your like me, and cant wait for the "kit" to come out....just go get the parts and make it yourself

Order a stronger steering servo, a decent battery charger, a set of wheels and some grippy tires. You can find axle-mounted servo bracket templates in the stickied thread above. Then, bash around to your heart's content until HPI finally decides to release the conversion kit.

As Budro said, you will need a better battery and a good charger.

To go along with the HPI stage 1 rock crawling, I would foresee a good motor/esc like the Novak Rooster crawlier kit and a set of tires on beadlocks. (Axial, proline 8 shooter etc...)

That would be a very nice start !

Preferably, run it a bit stock and replace stuff a piece at a time. It's very interesting to see the truck crawl better as you improve each part.

When I first got mine, I removed the brace on the rear bottom links as that was limiting articulation. The other thing I did was ziptie the battery under the servo to get more weight in the front (this got rid of the wheelies). That was before I even ran it. First mods were a stronger servo and Novak Rooster ESC. Now if only the crawler conversion from HPI was available....

So, the Novak rooster crawler ESC is specially designed for crawling ? How does it make it special over the stock one for the WK ? How about the stock motor, is it ok to start out with ?
Thanks,
Raz

i think the difference in esc`s is the rooster has a drag brake which ive read is good to have im not sure though cause im running the stock one i wont upgrade it till mine breaks i dont want it sitting in a bin still working but not in use ya know the stock wk esc and novak fiftyfive motor works for me just fine

The drag brake has been a major improvment for me. Maybe it's a bit smoother than the stock ESC too, I dont know...

The stock motor is good enough to start crawling even if I ruined two of them. One after like 2 month of crawling and one just a few days old after a dramatic mudding. They dont seem designed for crawling and you will have to change sooner or later.

Edit : It has no delay reverse also.

yeah get rid of the brace cuz it literally gets you twice the articulation and ziptie the batt in front also you can lengthen the wb by about an inch for free by moving some mounts around. the stock motor isnt the best at crawling but i dont care because its more fun actually trying to get over stuff

i took it in some dusty sand/dirt after like 5 packs i fried the motor but before that i was crawling for hours straight and the motor didnt over heat then again is was like 30 degrees out side

Locking the differentials will make a huge difference right away. That was actually the first thing I did to my WK and was amazed at how much better it climbed. You can search here and see that lots of people use JB weld or even silly putty to lock the diff's. I bought a set of diff lockers from my LHS for like 10 bucks and they were easy to put in.
