Hello Since I'm kind of new to the game, I need a little advice. Recently, I was given a stock WK with a fried ESC and motor. The steering is broken too. Everything else is exactly the way it was from the factory. I have no electronic knowledge, so: 1) What kind of ESC should I put in it? I know nothing about these things. 2) What kind of motor should I use? 3) I have seen these steering kits with the servo on top of the axle. Is it worth it to move it to that location? 4) Is it worth it to lengthen the wheelbase? How would I go about doing that? 5) Are frame upgrades worth the time/money? 6) What kind of upgraded shocks should I get? Sorry for the length, but I don't really know what I am doing. Any advice is appreciated.

Did you get the manual with it? The manual has great exploded views of all the parts on the truck. I'm sure others will have better suggestions, but here is a radio I recently picked up. It comes with a speed control, servo and Rx. I didn't need the radio, but to buy the speed control, Rx and servo separatly was the same price as just getting the whole package. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LXASX4**&P=SM I use it with this motor... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...0700&search=Go Servo on the axle = good idea Lengthen wheel base also = good idea, there are kits out there, do a search, or you can build your own links. search this forum too. Frame upgrades = depends what you want... mine has stock frame. I use stock shocks, they seem to be fine for what I do with the truck. Oh yeah... get one of these too... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXS361&P=ML Last edited by galaxiex; 06-22-2008 at 07:48 PM. | |

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between a crawler and a basher?

A basher is more for higher speeds and a crawler is built for going slow and having more torq

Oh, gotcha. Crawler then. The guy I bought it from put in a Towerpro MG995. Is that any good? Might it explain the busted steering? Ideally, I would like low wheel speed and a whole mess of torque. The radio system still works fine, and thats something I do not want to mess with. That really just leaves me needing a good ESC and motor. Also, I would like to get some kind of custom frame. Where might I find a good one of those?

Well, that does look pretty sweet. I would say that a custom frame is in my near future, but I am still not sure what to do about the ESC and motor. :-(

You could get a Tekin FXR Crawler combo you get a nice ESC and a 55t motor the FXR has more setting than the rooster plus you can get Tekin's hotwire to change your ESC's programming VIA your PC. You also can't forget about the right combo on your spurs and pinions, I started with 96t spur and 14t pinion which was great for low wheel spin and high torque. Yes move the servo to the axle, the stock steering is only good if your going for a scale look and I used JOWETTS servo mount which i think is great, you can use a saddle pack if you want with it. Stretching the wheel base is need to help fight the bad COG (center of gravity) of the WK plus makes the platform stable when climbing uphill. I use K&S 1/4 tubing with a .035 wall, 6-32 All thread, and Dubro HD ball ends I also use Traxxas rod ends the Dubro's are on the pricey side. I would say if you want a comp based crawler go with Offroader's Widow chassis or the Manta, I've made both chassis for like $10 cutting boards and a roto bit. I've also seen people use a AX10 chassis to make a comp WK. Right now my WK is sitting on a TCS X-Trail Chassis. ONE CHASSIS TO STAY AWAY FROM IS THE NEW ERA ONE. For shocks i use T-maxx big bores, I thinking of getting a set of the losi rock crawling shocks for my comp level rig. Also on your axles the three screw mounts on the bottom of the axles cut them off so you won't hang on the rocks. If there is anything else you need help with just yell. Later

I appreciate the info folks. I have also seen some custom work done to the back axle to improve the steering lockout design. Is this worth looking into?

Yes it is a very good idea to strengthen the rear lock out.
