Default Good brushless setup?

Hello all,

My WK has been dormant for pretty much all of summer (weird season to have it sitting, I know... but it was mostly due to being busy with renovations/new job). Anyways, I've been thinking about the coming winter (Think Canada --> snow + damn cold) and was thinking a brushless setup with paddles may be the way to go.

I looked at the Castle Brushless set ups and saw that they are ~$250 regardless of size. I also saw the associated series, particularily this one:

Anyone have any experience with it? Its not for crawling but more of a high wheelspeed for deep powder. I was also interested in it because it says it is waterproof which would be very nice.

Any experiences with this setup or any other advice to give>?

Thanks and sorry for the non-crawler topic.

Ae products are top notch. I haven't used it but....
Mambas are really nice, but they don't like the wet too much

EDIT: I looked closer at that thing, it is 3100 Kv, unless you have 3C lipo, you're gonna want more wheelspeed than that.

How much voltage are you planning to run?
What kind of gearing can you run?
How fast do you want to go?
3S or 4S lipo would be best. But lipo batteries are not recommend for water or moisture so maybe NiMh would be better. Maybe 10 cells. Some of the Castle ESC's are water proof (the mamba 25 is water proof but might not handle the amps you need). Or you could just build a box and make it water proof. I big brushless outrunner will be water proof and you could gear it high for wheel speed since you won't be crawling with it. This is really a question you want to ask in the electronics section. I think you might get better and more knowledgeable responses.

I would talk to John of Holmes Hobbies about your brushless needs. Guaranteed he will know what will work best.

I ran my Novak XBR 8.5 WK last winter without issues. I ballooned the motor and ESC for protection, ran a 6 cell NiMH with stock gearing. It will handle a 7 cell maximum and was quite fast. I think it was around $169 or so. Anything more than that might get pricey.

Good to hear. I will look into the Novak setup.

I currently have 3300mah NIMH packs. I have gearing options starting at stock and getting lower down to 15/96 I think.

I currently run a NOVAK 7.5 brushless. Highly recommended.
Your 3300 Mah battery will suffice.

How much power compared to stock? Have you run the optional 20T motor from HPI. Its OK but still not enough wheelspeed I don't think.

A 5700 or 4600 castle sidewinder combo would be pretty nice IMO. $150 for the combo, and plenty plenty power in a WK. I ran the 4600 with some 3300 packs in my WK and got tons of wheelies, fast enough speed, and about 30 minutes of runtime out of each pack.

Oh ya I was going to ask. How do the turns work with brushless? Is it the same as brushed? Lower is higher rpm more HP?

The short answer is yes. Brushless motors are usually reffered to as being "equivalant" to an x number of turns brushed motor, but the technology of a brushless motor is quite different than brushed so I think it's just used as a comparision. Maybe someone else could go into more detail, but I think that answers your question.

If I am reading the description right, it calls for 6 cells max input. It specs 8.4v, but that is still far below what a 3s lipo will deliver.

I think the ad is confusing Nicd/NiMh with Lipo. I would take the 8.4v as the max. Which is actually 7 NiCd/NiMh cells.

Also, I'm sure the associated web site has that info somewhere.

I agree, the sidewinder is nice in a King! I ran the sidewinder 4600 in my wheely king and it had a ton of power! Stock pinion with a 96t spur, take a look

Sorry to bring this up again but what does everyone think about putting a traxxas VXL brushless system in a wheely king? They make the stampede go like hell.

It's a good system, it's not the fastest but....

I'm running a mamba max with a crawlmaster motor in my king. Plenty of omph to get up stuff. The nice thing about castle is the ability to plug it into my laptop and not count lights to adjust it.
