Default Wheely King Project Study - need help

Hi guys,

I am working on this project at college and we decided to work on the Wheely King cuz its wayyyyy more fun then working on a toaster or an umbrella (LOLOL)

Anyways, we need to conduct a user study for our product to identify possible ways to redesign our Wheely King 4x4 and could really use your help. If you guys could spend 5 minutes of your time to answer the following questions, that would be truly appreciated

The original ESC (Jolt) was junk. It smoked the first day.


When you first used the Wheely King, what problems did you face?
The ESC burned up

How did you resolve them?

I bought a Novak XRS

Does the Wheely King perform the function that you bought it to perform? (See Question 2) It has been a lot of fun.


What design modifications would you suggest to improve the overall experience of your Wheely King?
Offer one that comes with HPIs new rock crawler conversion kit in the box.

  • What disadvantages do you see with the original Wheely King? Top heavy and alot of plastic
  • When you first used the Wheely King, what problems did you face? How did you resolve them? It would barely do a wheely with stock battery so I put a better one in.

  • What design modifications would you suggest to improve the overall experience of your Wheely King? Turn the chassis around so the battery is in front and lock the axles

I would like to thank everyone who has responded so far...

If my team successfully redesigns the HPI Wheely to improve on the stock version, there is a possibility that our final prototype and recommendations will be forwarded to HPI.

Therefore, we need as many respondents as possible...So, please keep responding people...

  • What modifications have you made to your car & how has that improved the performance? - Chassis, transmission, steering servo relocated, axle link mounts/truss, rear steer lockout, replaced all links, upgraded axle ring/pinion gears, locked diffs, equal length 4-link bars (Only the axles are left from the original kit and the internals have been upgraded)
  • What disadvantages do you see with the original Wheely King? - poor steering. Needs extensive modification to be a competition caliber crawler but it wasn't initially designed for Rock Crawling. Minor mods make it a capable basher/trail rig
  • When you first used the Wheely King, what problems did you face? How did you resolve them? - Marginal Electronics = Replaced all RTR kit electronics, Center of Gravity/Gear ratio = Swapped stock trans for Axial AX10 trans, Plastic links = metal links
  • Does the Wheely King perform the function that you bought it to perform? (See Question 2) - Stock = No, After mods = yes
  • What design modifications would you suggest to improve the overall experience of your Wheely King? - Compact, low mounted motor design

  • What modifications have you made to your car & how has that improved the performance? Custom chassis, shorter shocks, longer wheelbase, different transmission, etc, etc,. The only parts used from the original WheelyKing are the axels.
  • What disadvantages do you see with the original Wheely King? To short, to high, wrong tires, aweful electronics, weight balance, poor steering. (if you want it to crawl)
  • When you first used the Wheely King, what problems did you face? How did you resolve them? No power with the steering configuration. Put the servo on the axel.
  • Does the Wheely King perform the function that you bought it to perform? (See Question 2) No, not in stock form. It does now.
  • What design modifications would you suggest to improve the overall experience of your Wheely King? Get rid of the monster truckstyle frame, redesign the transmission and battery location. Improve the steering and make better axle mounts for the links and shocks.

  • Nothing for what it was designed to be it is excellent
  • for crawling, tires, tranny stlye, weight distribution, ESC, servo placement,
  • When you first used the Wheely King, what problems did you face? How did you resolve them? to fast, replaced motor, tires to hard, replaced with pro line M2K Mashers, and a set of axial beadlocks...
  • Does the Wheely King perform the function that you bought it to perform? (See Question 2) It was flexy as heck and looked easy to modify into a rock crawler.. (I bought mine pre axial scorpion release)
  • What design modifications would you suggest to improve the overall experience of your Wheely King?
