Default Why the Wheely King??

I have been working on a build design for an E-Maxx, for the simple reason I have one and I do like to be different. Which is brings me to my question for those of you who have a Wheely King Crawler. I mean I have seen them pretty cheap, and I have seen some of you guys do some of the most incredible mods to this lil truck, yet it would seem cheaper to just buy an AX10. And as many WK in this forum I would surmise that there is something about this truck that I am missing. That either the setup, the durability or just the price of the parts is what draws people to this truck. The main purpose to the question is that at my local track someone is interested in one of my electric touring sedans and has a WK to trade. The E-Maxx is gonna take time being a custom build, where as I could get a quick fix with the WK buy parts and get it running and then take my time with the custom build. So what drew you to the WK? thanks!!

I can only speak for myself but... I got the WK because it was a cheap way to get into "real" 4x4 rc trucks.(Not Wal-Mart specials) The major advantage of a WK is its Axles. They are strong as hell, but in the same breath I have to say that a lot of people don't use them because they are a lot wider than axials. I personally think that if someone gets a WK and turns it into a crawler they will learn more. Because you have to be more creative with your design to make it a capable rig, not just buy everything and go crawling. Although now there is a growing amount of support in the aftermarket world every day. If I were you and someone wanted to trade you a good WK RTR for an electric touring car... I would. A WK is a lot of fun to crawl around with, and on the flip side... If you get bored of having the WK as a crawler when you get done with your E-Maxx, you can turn it back to stock and have one hell of a basher. I'm sure some people may differ in opinions and some may not. This is just my .02.

I like things that are different. With the mods i have done to my wk it is almost bulletproof. I run the crap out of it and have let folks from 2yrs old to 83 drive it and i dont worry about it breaking. It has aluminum hubs,c's, strc rear lock outs rc4wd stainless steel front dogbones (axles) aluminum tranny gears, novak rooster crawler, 55 t motor tower pro servo( i have went thru a few of these).
But best of all the satisfaction of customizing my own rig that is a very capable crawler. It is very close to hanging in there with my stock chassis but heavly modifeid AX-10. I plan on making a custom chassis for it and a drive shaft dig and actually driving it in a few comps along with my AX-10 to see which one i can do better with.
I learned most of the thing buy reading up on the information on this site. I hate to say it but i like the building and tinkering almost as much as driving.
Yes this is a WK, In a axial chassis. Still has wk tranny and axles.

It is I'm sorry to say much cheaper to buy an axial for a crawler.

Now with that out of the way, I myself went with a wheely king because I prefer to not follow along with what everyone else around me is doing. All the people I crawl with were running axial kits and after looking at the different options available I scored a good deal on a wheely king. As has been said, the axles are pretty near indestructable, and they're very simple to work on. My truck has gone through several different evolutions from a stretched stock chassis to my current setup running an edge frame from tcs and an r2-dig tranny. The axles are wider, but the extra width works for me and I was able to get it without having to run wideners which put extra stain on the wheel axles hubs and bearings. My current set-up with wheely king axles will hang with and often beat the modded axials I crawl against, so all in all I'm very happy with my decision to go that route despite the extra money and effort it took.

Awesome Rig! Unless you told me what it was it would have taken me awhile to figure it out. This is awesome that you can actually use parts from other vehicles to pretty much create your own!

Perfect! Wider, fantastic, that lil tidbit to me would be a big, sorry huge point for the WK. Strong axels and wider stance now this is the information that will push a guy towards a WK.

It has been fun building it. It started out stock and went to this.

Then i tried a few different chassis's built from cutting board.

Then decided to try to fit it in a axial chassis after hearing about it on rcc. These were mock ups before adding electronics.

I learned alot during these phases of build and still learn something everytime i sit down to do some work. I save a little money building my own stuff and feel great about it. Lets me get some better parts also.

That is very cool, looking at the progression, or should I say the transformation that is now an awesome crawler.

The extra width is a huge plus for me too. And even the stock tranny can be made bulletproof for less than $20.

As you get into it you'll look at more and more aftermarket parts intended for other trucks that will work very very well with wk axles.

Out of the 4 trucks I have my wk is my hands down favorite. It runs great, was a blast to build, and nobody around me has one

Cause I'm poor and it was cheap, Like the others said, it's my favourite truck at the moment. I got a used one at a good price, diff gears blown, and ran it stock for a day after replacing some gears, then started the mods.

First the body was changed.

Then I made a custom chassis, clocked motor plate ect.ect.

And eventually ended up with this

Default WK in Axial Chassis

Nice work Rottenbelly - I am thinking of doing the Axial Chassis switch over. I have a wheely king with a clocked motor so it sticks out of the side of my stock WK chassis and the chassis is pretty chopped up at this point It is still holding together.

I really like the scaler look of the 1/8 scale jeep rubicon and I want to simply switch bodies the way I do now for comps(I put the little truck body on for comping). My other concern is mounting the WK tranny on the axial mount/skip plate. I am gonna have to get creative with that...

As for mounting the tranny on a skid plate. I made my own and it is very strong. Did some measuring and cut out a few. Even went ahead and triangulated the links to fix the torque twist. A cutting board cost 2.97 from wal mart and you could probably cut about 8 out of one. So if you mess up a time or two no big deal. Here is my most recent one.

Fits in there nice, if i remember rigt it is only 1/4 inch wider than a stock axial.

Im gunna have to agree with everyone else. My friends all have axial ax10 rtr with a few hop ups. I wanted to be a little different. And I wanted to out crawl the off the shelf bolt on upgrade trucks with my custom underdog (so to speak). Besides I like the fact that my truck is built the way I want it and I have learned so much doing so. The people with the axials that all the parts bolt right on cant say that. You have to be patient to be a WK crawler owner and you have to be willing to spend some time in the garage tinkering. (best part!!!!)

Mine has come a long way from the wheely popper my wife bought me.

I bought mine because it was a deal I couldn't pass up, and I like to be different.. everyone I know runs axials or mrc's... so I am just being different, really.. I am having Del Monte here make me a custom banana chassis that is wide enough to accomodate my WK trans/motor setup...

When I got mine the AX-10 was still in pre-order w/ no RTR available. I do love to work on it though:-P. It has spent more time in pieces on the bench than it has on the rocks, lol. Almost all my non-stock parts have been made by me (w/ help from this forum) Not bought

Here's a couple of pics:

some people have said they bought it because it was cheap and others have said they cost alot more than otherss, i bought mine because it was cheap to buy rtr and then i could slowly put money into it for what i wanted which probly turns out deared than an off the shelf rtr crawler, i also wanted it because it gives me something to do to make parts myself and i can make them how i want them.

I have had mine for about a year or so.. yep the axles are pretty tough!! I initally got it because it was a nice all inclusive truck, then started moding it for crawling.. this was pre AX-10.. After a good long time of heavy abuse my rear axle is finallly starting to give out.
Currently it has been tummy tucked, is running a rc4wd dig tranny, rooster crawler ESC, and a 45 trn motor.. love this rig but am going to upgrade soon and use the axles for another buyild after I rebuild them.

I can't remember if I originally bought the wheely king for crawling or not..LOL. Either way, I had more fun slowly upgrading the truck to a crawler. With each mod I got to see how it made the truck work better, or worse... I truly think that the wheely king guys who took a stock wheely king and now have a dedicated crawler know far more than the average axial guy.

I bought mine before the axial came out. but i bought it to get more in to r/c crawling my nylint just wasnt cutting it anymore. I needed a more realistic and more modifiable truck. I started out with simple mods and then went a more scale rought. I hand made all the frame, bumpers, and links.
