Crawler King My Review

Well I recently got a Losi Micro Crawler for a scale build and caught the RC bug yet again. Now I have built a few Crawlers/Scalers before and sold them. I wanted something new that could "crawl" and have some fun at the same time without having to do a lot of changes. I have read a lot of bad things about the CK. Here is my Opinion/Review on the CK.

1st off HPI did mess up with naming this Rig for a Crawler audience. If you are new to crawling and that is all you want to do then do not buy this Truck. It will do some serious four wheelen' and some crawling but not Competion Crawling. If you are looking for more of a Scale Rig ( I use the term Scale loosley cause I know there are some Hardcore Scaler guys out there.) with big fun then this is it!!! I am very pleased with it. With the Stock Gearing and 55 turn motor with a 3300 nimh mah 7.2v pack I was able to run for over 30 minutes at full throttle up dirt hills spinning tires and all. Plenty of torque to go over rocks and climb hills and still have plenty of fun wheel speed.

Put a stiffer shock spring in the right rear to get rid of the Torque Twist typical of the Wheely King. I am running 90 Weight oil in all 4 shocks. I took one of the stock shocks and stretched it to double the size, cut it in half and used that for the stiffer shock. The stock springs are pretty soft. I replaced those with some shocks from my local hardware store they are way better and way cheaper than regular shock springs.

Now it barely has any steering due to the Huge tires and chassis mounted Servo. The stock Servo is O.K. The wheels turn more easy when on the throttle. I am going to replace the servo at some point. That is the CK's worst all around Negative. The ESC could be a little better but certainly does what it is supposed to. real working Beallock tires aloow you to change tires with ease, The stock Tires are Pretty Cool in my book.

So after all that I just wanted to dial in on the Crawler King because it is doing exactly what I wanted it to. So do not think of this Rig as a Typical Rock Crawler but just a affordable 4 wheel drive, drive it anywhere old school fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because you cannot spend all your time building!!!!

i was in love with mine for about 3 days then we tried to go thru snow..... didnt happen

I have one and love it. No mods on mine other than pre-load on the right rear... the body would rub instantly on the tire when hitting the throttle.
I've wheeled mine a LOT and attempted some crawling that challenges my AX10- and the Crawler King actually can do everything my AX10 in box stock form can do.

ToyComa 01-11-2010 12:03 AM

I like mine. I got it last week and just ordered STRC steering links along with 30 degree bent lower link and 93 spur gear. I also bought a 19t gear for the motor. So make it a little better on the bottom end for crawling but keep some speed for dirt hills and what not.
Only thing currently done to it is the addition of this old body I had lying around.

A higher torque servo will help for sure. Also replacing any plastic steering components with metal. "thumbsup"

Hey slim. I just went over to Hobby Town and picked up an aluminum servo arm. They had that right there. I know the have the ultra torque metal gear servos as well.
However.... I just bought a metal gear, ultra torque from the for sale section here. Bout 2 weeks ago. Look around a bit. It made all the difference in the world to replace just the arm!

That pic is a couple month old

I have recently bought a hpi 15t motor with 10t pinion gear, front servo mount, weights in tires cut foams, and a hpi freight body.
PS.. THEY ARE VERY DURABLE, I HAVE DROP MINE COUNTLES AMOUNTS OF TIMES. NO DAMAGE SO FAR

Wel l recently l installed a Novak Rooster Crawler For Drag Brake. For that to work Properly I had to swap out the motors. The stock 55t would not hold very well due to the small magnets so I stepped up to an Integy V10 50 turn. That motor has lots of power and very smooth low speed with plenty of wheel speed with stock gearing. Now the Drag Brake works great. Also I did an Axle Servo Mod for better steering. Added juts a little weight to the front tires. A couple of short VIds and some new Pics.

STRC - Wheely King Complete Aluminum Steering linkage upgrade kit
Ive used it on my brother's wk, he didnt like the way it looked with the servo on the axle so I got him the STRC kit and it fits and looks nice, you may not realize it but those plastic parts have ALOT of play in them, made the steering much better. Paired up with a high torque servo its very nice. I put the water proof traxxas tmaxx servo on his and it works like a champ.

@skullking- not to be a stalker but I recognize the back ground in your vids, I live near there. We should gtg!
